Proton Preve: Variants explained
Proton Preve has been a successful product for the company ever since it was launched in the Malaysian market. One of the many reasons behind its success is the fact that Proton is an indigenous Malaysian company and hence it is more aware of the needs and requirements of the local market and also has a stronger bond and connection with the Malaysians. Proton is known to manufacture cars that are loaded with interesting features and are very pocket-friendly. The Preve is no exception. The Proton Preve variants that are available in Malaysia include the 1.6 EXECUTIVE CVT and 1.6 PREMIUM CVT. Today we are going to find out what is the difference between the two models.
Engine and performance
Both the variants of the Proton Preve are available with a single engine option. It is a 1.6-litre turbo engine that churns out 138 horsepower at 5000 rpm and generates 205 Nm of peak torque at 2000 to 4000 rpm. The engine is mated to a 7-speed ProTonic gearbox.
Since the engine in the models is the same, the performance numbers are same as well. We see a 0-100 kmph time of 9.6 seconds. Both the cars have a top speed of 190 kmph. Proton claims that they will give a fuel efficiency of 15 kmpl. Talking about performance, Proton has made a slight change in the tyre and wheel size of the two variants. The EXECUTIVE trim has got 16-inch alloy wheels with a tyre size of 205/55 R16 whereas the PREMIUM trim has been fitted with 17-inch alloy wheels and they wear tyre of size 215/45 R17.
Design and styling
It would be a bit difficult for you to differentiate between the Preve 1.6 EXECUTIVE CVT and Preve 1.6 PREMIUM CVT at a first glance because there is a lot of similarity in the way both these models look. However, Proton has made a few changes here and there to justify the price difference between the two variants.
The PREMIUM variant gets projector headlamps with LED daytime running lights. The EXECUTIVE variant also has projector headlamps but misses out on LED DRLs but does get an LED position lamp. There is a rear spoiler in the higher-end model for added premiumness and sportiness which the base model lacks. Similarly, we get a black roof with the PREMIUM variant and body-colored with the EXECUTIVE variant. Another feature that isn’t the same between the two is the rearview mirror colour. The base model gets body-colored rearview mirrors whereas the higher-end model flaunts its Quartz black colour rearview mirrors. Also, the mirrors on the latter are auto foldable.
Interior and features
The 1.6 EXECUTIVE CVT variant gets grey IP Panel & Door Handle trim, fabric seats and door trim, and naked steering wheel with an audio switch. There is manual AC, no push start button, and no navigation.
On the other hand, the 1.6 PREMIUM CVT model has got IP Panel & Door Handle Trim finished in black. It has leather seats and door trim, and even a leather-wrapped steering wheel. We also get a built-in navigation system, automatic AC, a push start button, auto cruise, auto wipers, and even a set of paddle shifters.
Safety features
Proton Preve comes with various safety features that are common in both the variants. Of course, with a price point like that of the Preve’s, you shouldn’t expect very high-end and advanced safety features. The Preve gets ABS with EBD, Dual SRS Airbags with Seatbelt Pre-tensioner, Side Airbags, Curtain Airbags, Front and Rear Fog Lamps, Immobiliser, Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Brake Assist (BA) and Traction Control (TC), Top Tether for Child Seats, ISOFIX Seat Mountings, Front Active Headrest, and Anti-trap Power Window (Driver side only). The only safety feature that is missing on the EXECUTIVE variant of the Preve is the Auto Headlamp.
These were the differences that you will find between the two variants of the Proton Preve. To be honest, these differences are very trivial. But Proton had to make some changes between the two. The Proton Preve price for the 1.6 EXECUTIVE CVT has been set at RM 61,090 and the 1.6 PREMIUM CVT will set you back by RM 68,430. Both the cars are available in five colour options - Ruby Red, Graphite Grey, Sterling Silver, Cotton White, and Carnelian Brown.
