The Proton eMAS 5 will square up against the BYD Dolphin and the upcoming Perodua EV.As reported by Chinese media, An Conghui, President of Geely Holding Group and Chairman of Geely Auto Group, confirmed that the Geely Xingyuan will hit Malaysian shores in 2025 following the eMAS 7’s success. Thus, it is pretty clear now that the Xingyuan EV will arrive in the local market as Proton’s next EV.
But what will the upcoming Proton EV be called? Well, no clarity has yet come on this, but it is widely speculated that it will be called the Proton eMAS 5.
Building on this speculation, let’s dive into what we know so far about the Proton eMAS 5 -
It is an electric hatchback
Launched in October 2024 in China, the upcoming Proton EV twin Geely Xingyuan is an electric hatchback with dimensions similar to that of the BYD Dolphin. It measures 4,135 mm in length, 1,805 mm in width, and 1,570 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,650 mm. Compared to the Dolphin, it is 155 mm shorter and 35 mm wider.
Equipped with CATL-sourced battery
Instead of Geely’s in-house developed Aegis “short blade” packs, the Xingyuan comes equipped with a CATL-sourced lithium iron phosphate battery unit. It is offered in two capacities - 30.12- and 40.16-kWh. The former is said to provide up to 310 km (on the lenient CLTC test cycle), while the latter cruises up to 410 km. However, if we look at it through the tougher WLTP standards, the range can be reduced to something between 270 km and 370 km.
For comparison, the Dolphin comes powered by a - 44.9 kWh or 60.48 kWh Blade battery pack, offering a WLTP-claimed range of 340 km and 427 km, respectively.
0-50 kmph acceleration time of 3.9 seconds
The twin model of the upcoming Proton eMAS 5 comes powered by an 11-in-1 intelligent electric drive motor in two different tunings generating 78 hp and 114 hp. The EV runs from zero to 50 kmph in 3.9 seconds and achieves a top speed of 140 kmph.
30% to 80% charging in 21 mins
The EV supports both slow and fast charging. Using a maximum charging rate of 1.66C, the battery juices up from 30% to 80% in just 21 minutes. The 10-minute fast charging offers a range of 120 km, claims Geely.
Kitted with several creature comforts
Despite being a hatchback, the Xingyuan is loaded with several creature comforts that are likely to be seen on the Proton model as well. The list includes -
- 8.8-inch LCD instrument panel
- 10.1-inch or 14.6-inch infotainment unit supporting voice assistant and over-the-air updates
- 50 W wireless fast charging
- 256-colour ambient light
- Keyless entry
- 4-speaker audio system
- Power-adjustable driver seat
- ADAS package - Adaptive cruise control, traffic sign recognition, lane departure warning, and automatic emergency braking
More affordable than the Proton eMAS 7
Targeting the mass market, the compact Proton eMAS 5 is expected to be more affordable than the bigger and premium Proton eMAS 7. It is likely to be priced under RM 100k in competition with the upcoming Perodua EV.
