Proton calls Perdana owners for Takata airbag replacement
KUALA LUMPUR: The national carmaker Proton recalled the Perdana sedan last year in January for replacing the airbag inflator. The replacement of the airbags was a part of the global initiative taken by different automakers who have used airbags made by Takata.
All the actions taken were in accordance with the Defect Information Report issued by the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration) of America that required the replacement of non-desiccated passenger inflators all around the world.
Well, Proton has started the replacement of Takata airbags in January 2019 only, and as of August 18, 2020, it has replaced 5,625 or 87.5% units out of the total 6,342 affected cars. These units were manufactured from 2012 to end-August 2018. Recently, the automaker issued a press release urging the remaining 717 owners to replace their car’s airbags as soon as possible.
Further, the company also reassures all the Proton customers that the said exercise does not affect any other Proton model as those are fitted with the airbags supplied by a different vendor.
The remaining owners can visit the nearest Proton service outlet for the free of charge airbag replacement which will take about an hour. Also, the customers need not worry about safety measures as stringent controls are in place to ensure customers’ safety.
“The safety of our customers is of the utmost importance. However, we have not been able to connect with all affected owners due to obsolete or incomplete contact information. Therefore, we would like to urge all Proton Perdana owners who have not had their passenger airbag inflators replaced to call our service centres to book an appointment as soon as possible. Replacement of the inflator will take approximately one hour and will be performed free of charge. At the same time, cars built after August 31, 2018, are unaffected,” said Roslan Abdullah, Chief Executive Officer of Proton Edar.
