Production of synthetic eFuel begin; Porsche is part of the team
KUALA LUMPUR: Porsche along with several international partners and Highly Innovative Fuels (a Chile-based operating company) has commenced the production work of synthetic fuels. Thus giving a new lease of life to internal combustion engines.
Oliver Blume, CEO of Porsche, said that "Combustion engines can be powered with e-fuels in a virtually carbon-neutral manner. They don’t have to be converted or retrofitted for it.
E-fuels can be offered as an admixture or alone at all filling stations. We have to offer an option to the owners of existing vehicles too.”
Key details about Porsche’s eFuel -
- It will be manufactured at the Haru Oni plant
- The eFuel is a mix of water, carbon dioxide, and wind energy captured from the air
- The fuel’s pilot production took place at the 3.7-hectare Puntarenas, Chile plant
- Around 130,000 liters/year of eFuel will be produced under the pilot phase and will be used in projects like Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup and at Porsche Experience Centre
- In its production phase, around 55 million liters per year will be produced by the middle of the decade and 550 million liters two years later
The Chile-based facility is a USD 74 million integrated hydrogen facility run by HIF together with Siemens Energy, ExxonMobil, the Chilean state energy company, and Porsche.
The success of the eFuel will be a piece of big news on the field as it wouldn't require rewriting rulebooks. So, the same distribution and transport channels will work as for regular fuel, which will make it considerably cheaper than building EV charging stations worldwide.
