Porsche 911 GT2 RS sets a new lap record

KUALA LUMPUR: Porsche has proved once again that it is indeed one of the best when it comes to delivering performance. Its production road car, the 911 GT2 RS fitted with a new ‘Manthey Performance Kit’ has registered a new lap record at the Nurburgring.

The Porsche 911 GT2 RS managed an amazing lap time of 6m 43.3 sec around the official 20.832 km circuit. Great, isn't it? In comparison, the Mercedes-AMG GT R Black Series ran along the same circuit with a lap time of 6m 48.07 sec. Thus making the GT2 RS five second faster than the Black Series.

Porsche performed the said Nurburgring attempt last week, June 14th to be exact. Sitting behind the GT2 RS wheels that day was automaker’s factory driver Lars Kern, who managed an average speed of 186 kmph with the temperature shooting 41 degrees.

On his experience, Kers said, “The 911 GT2 RS sticks to the track like glue with the Manthey Performance Kit.” He further added, “You feel as if you’re in a racing car, especially on faster corners. It is truly breathtaking how the car puts its 700PS (691bhp) down, and how incredibly well it breaks while always remaining easy to control.”

The above-mentioned ‘Manthey Performance Kit’ is only available as a package, however, Porsche is considering the purchase of individual parts. The said kit includes -

  • New front spoiler flaps
  • Carbon underbody
  • Front wheels with air guide elements

These additions result in an enchanted rear downforce (increased by 93 kg, 200kg in total) at the same speed.

Furthermore, the new rear spoiler, modified diffuser, and wheels with ‘aerodiscs’, call for 70 kg of downforce at 200 kmph on the front axle. The car also gets an additional water tank for the intercoolers whose capacity is increased by nine-litre. The GT2 RS benefits from special racing brake pads, adjustable front shocks, magnesium wheels (11.4 kg weight saving), and steel-encased brake lines.

Porsche’s VP of GT cars, Andreas Preuninger said, “With these newly developed parts, we have made an extremely good car even better.” He added, “The 911 GT2 RS with the Manthey Performance Kit is perfectly tailored to the needs of those customers who like to take their cars on track, especially the Nürburgring Nordschleife.”
