Perodua’s new black SUV coming soon: Is It Aruz Black edition?

KUALA LUMPUR: Perodua has caused quite a buzz on its social media platform with the release of a new teaser, announcing that something new and black is coming for “black car lovers.” While the automaker kept the model’s name under wraps, the sleek black silhouette strongly suggests that it is the Perodua Aruz. 

The Perodua Aruz first hit the Malaysian roads in 2019 and quickly became one of the most sought-after SUVs due to its affordable pricing, practicality, and capacity to seat seven passengers. 

The Perodua Aruz is offered in two variants - X and AV, both are powered by the same 1.5-litre naturally-aspirated Dual VVT-i four-cylinder engine kicking out a maximum power of 102 PS at 6,000 rpm and a peak torque of 133 Nm at 4,200 rpm. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a four-speed 4E-AT automatic transmission. 

The SUV received a subtle update in 2021 introducing a new Passion red exterior shade, a new auto-lock function, and integrated side steps for easier access.

Despite these minimal updates, the Aruz continued to be a consistent performer in Perodua's lineup. According to recent data from the Road Transport Department of Malaysia (JPJ), Perodua sold 7,000 units of the SUV in the first half of 2024.

The Perodua Aruz twin, the Daihatsu Terios, received a facelift in Indonesia in June 2023, which sparked rumours of a similar update for the Aruz. However, no official confirmation is yet available on that. 

Meanwhile, the new teaser showcases the SUV in a new black colour, which is quite a bold addition to attract more buyers. Currently, the only Perodua model offering a black option is the Alza.
