Perodua Showcases Hybrid Technology at KLIMS 2018
KUALA LUMPUR: Perodua has showcased a wide range of cars at the ongoing Kuala Lumpur International Motor Show (KLIMS), including the Myvi GT and X-Concept. The company also teased its upcoming SUV that is expected to be unveiled in early 2019. However, one of the relatively unnoticed highlights of Perodua’s KLIMS showcase was the company’s new hybrid system, which is based on Daihatsu technology.
The aforementioned hybrid system is expected to be equipped in various upcoming Perodua models, though the automaker is yet to make an official announcement about the same. However, the manufacturer has announced that the hybrid system is compatible with its safety tech, called Perodua Advanced Safety Assist (ASA), which includes features like Pre-Collision Warning and Braking. Since the Perodua Myvi is currently the only car in the company’s lineup to come with the safety technology, we expect it to be one of the first models to come with the hybrid system as well.
Strangely enough, Perodua didn’t mention any specific details about the hybrid system. Hence, we don’t know the engine’s cubic capacity, fuel type, and transmission type yet. The electric motor’s rating and battery capacity too are yet to be confirmed.
However, it has been confirmed that there is nothing truly groundbreaking about how the hybrid system works. Like in other manufacturers’ units, the system includes an internal combustion engine and an electric motor which can operate in tandem to supply power to the wheels. The two power plants can either provide power collectively or in isolation, depending on the operating mode.
In its default operating setting, the hybrid system draws pure electric power from the battery to the electric motor. However, more power can be supplied by kicking-in the internal combustion engine that works as a generator to charge the battery pack. The system also includes regenerative braking that allows the battery to be charged every time the brakes are applied.
Perodua has further claimed that its latest hybrid system is compatible with connected services. As a result, vehicles based on this system will be able to perform multiple smart tasks, including automatically scheduling an appointment for maintenance.
