Perodua revises its 2021 sales target to 214,000 units
KUALA LUMPUR: Finally, after seeing dull and gloomy days on the sales front for the last few months, the Malaysian automaker, Perodua is experiencing early signs of relief. The recent lockdown has majorly contributed to the sales slump experienced by the automaker and now with reliefs by the Government things seem to look up.

In August, Perodua Malaysia registered 6,988 units, though it is not at par with the automaker’s usual standards, but far better from the July figure, of 655 vehicles. All thanks to the lifting up of the nationwide lockdown, leading factories and showrooms to gradually resume operations.
As for the year-to-date total, Perodua has sold 104,933 units, when compared to the last year’s same time frame figures (119,977 units), it represents a 12.5 percent fall.
Despite the drop, Perodua remains enthusiastic to sell over 200,000 cars by the end of this year. Speaking of which, Perodua has revised its 2021 sales target from 240,000 units to 214,000 units. It seems like the two and a half month sales and production halt forced the automaker to make this revision.
Perodua President & CEO, Datuk Zainal Abidin Ahmad, said, “Based on the time and resources available, we are reducing our sales target by 10.8% to 214,000 units for this year from our earlier target of 240,000 units.”
As mentioned above, the business restriction put in place by the government during the lockdown has a big role to play in the sales dip. However, another major concern hanging over auto manufacturers is the global shortage of semiconductors. However, Perodua need not worry as Datuk Zainal has confirmed that they have secured sufficient semiconductor materials, ensuring a smooth vehicle production. Thus allowing the automaker to complete its outstanding orders.
Datuk Zainal said, “For now, the semiconductor chip supply is still a global issue and we are working with our partners and suppliers to limit any disruption it may cause.”
