Perodua is taking steps to ensure prompt car delivery

KUALA LUMPUR: Perodua currently has bookings for 234,000 units and the figure is only on the rise as we speak. Thus, forcing the Malaysian-born automaker to take quick and effective steps to deliver the cars to the customers on time with a minimum waiting period that on average stands between six to seven months (depending on the model).

Why do Perodua cars have such a long waiting period? Well, the rise in bookings is surely one of the factors. However, the main reason is the supply shortage of foreign workers and semiconductor chips.

What steps is Perodua taking to cut short the long waiting period on its cars? Perodua’s president and chief executive officer, Datuk Zainal Abidin Ahmad during the launch of Alza said that to solve the chip supply shortage issue the automaker has required alternative suppliers to source the chips from other vendors.

He further said that Perodua will largely remain unaffected by the global market uncertainties via the use of local manufacturing components. As for Alza, 95 per cent of the car is made from local components!

As for the supply shortage of foreign workers, Zainal Abidin said that it is being resolved at a fast pace.

What are Perodua’s sales targets for 2022 and how is the brand planning to achieve them? For the year 2022, Perodua aims to sell 247,800 units which is a 30.2 per cent increase over the previous year's 190,291 figure.

The automaker will do production balancing to ensure that the long waiting period issue is addressed, especially for some of its most popular models like Myvi, Aruz, and Alza.

He said that with managing and balancing, Aruz's waiting period can be brought down to less than three months and as for the recently launched Alza it would be more than three months.

Speaking of the 2022 Alza with over 30,000 bookings it has created a new record in the company’s history. In this, the top-spec AV variant has a 65 percent share. As for the waiting period for the first 30k batch, it is expected to be less than 10 months.

Will there be any impact of SST exemption on the demand for vehicles? On this Zainal Abidin said that it is too early to assess the impact.

As for Perodua’s entry into possible production of electric vehicles, he said that the company is still in the planning phase and an official announcement where there will be concrete cooperation with other national companies. He also said that a series hybrid model is more likely to come than a plug-in hybrid version.

It is most likely for Perodua to enter into cooperation with the national utility company, Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB), as also suggested by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.
The two can introduce affordable EV charging rates, as the TNB is working to increase its energy production and provide adequate EV charging stations.
