Perodua hits highest market share ever for 2016 at 35.7%
Perodua sold over 207,100 vehicles for 2016, which the company estimates to comprise about 35.7% of the total industry volume for the year of 579,600 units, making it the all-time highest market share in the national compact carmaker’s industry.
Subsequent to the achievement of an estimated 35.7% of market share, it makes Perodua the country’s most preferred automotive brand for 11 consecutive years.
Perodua President & CEO, Datuk (Dr) Aminar Rashid Salleh said, “Despite 2016 being a challenging year, we are pleased to announce that all out models; from the Bezza to the Alza; are number one in their respective categories.”
According to Datuk Aminar, the Bezza sold over 36,000 for 2016 thus making it the number one compact sedan in the A-segment, despite being launched only in July. Another record achieved by Perodua is 24,600 vehicles registered in December 2016 alone, making it the highest monthly sales figure in the company’s history.
Projection for 2017
On the projection for 2017 industry volume, Perodua expects a slight improvement in the market with a 2% growth of the total industry volume to 590,000 units from 579,600 in 2016.
"Based on this projection, we target to capture 34% of the market share or to sell 202,000 vehicles in 2017,” Datuk Aminar added.
Export and after sales
Compared to 4,400 units exported in 2015, Perodua grew its export volume by 6% in 2016 to 4,700 units, with over 60% of its exports are to Indonesia while the remaining percentage comprises of countries like Sri Lanka, Brunei, Mauritius and Singapore. Datuk Aminar elaborated that the company is always learning and keen to expand its export markets by complying to each different requirement of different countries.
On profitability, Aminar said that Perodua would focus more on its after sales for revenue growth. “We are investing more in our after sales business to further improve our earnings, in fact, 2016 saw many records being made with over 2 million vehicles visiting our service centres nationwide,” he added.
Vehicle production
Production-wise, the second national carmaker produces 213,000 vehicles last year, a significant 16,000 in reduction compared to 229,000 units in 2015. The reduction is said due to decreased demand for vehicles in 2016.
Defects per unit (DPU) in both Perodua Manufacturing Sdn Bhd (PMSB) and Perodua Global Manufacturing Sdn Bhd (PGMSB) has significantly improved by 70% and 56% respectively.
On another note, Datuk Aminar also announced that Perodua is committed to assist its customers during natural disasters such as floods and earthquakes. “Whenever there is a natural disaster that involves a vehicle, it is an automatic SOP now for Perodua to provide complementary inspection to affected Perodua vehicles,” he said.
