In the automotive market, the demand for SUVs has been increasing for the past few years. As a result, automakers around the world are adding more SUV options to their lineups. In Malaysia as well, the national automakers have geared up for rolling out SUV choices for car enthusiasts.
After the huge success of the X70, Proton launched the X50 in the country, which has garnered much love and attention from the customers, resulting in more than 30,000 bookings. And now, here comes a compact SUV from the House of Perodua.
Dubbed as the Perodua Ativa, the SUV made its official debut just last week with all modern features and contemporary styling. In today’s guide, we highlight the top features of the Perodua Ativa that make it the perfect companion for the day-to-day urban lifestyle, but before that have a look at its price.

Adaptive High Beam
The Adaptive Driving Beam feature is new to the brand as well as segment. Just like Audi’s Matrix LED, it detects the oncoming vehicles with the help of software and sensors and then turns off individual LEDs to prevent glare. This smart auto high beam is available in the top-spec Ativa AV.
DNGA platform
The new Perodua SUV is based on the DNGA platform (Daihatsu New Global Architecture) that made its debut in Japan two years back. Built for the present and future compact cars, the DNGA is a modular and CASE-ready (connected, autonomous, shared, and electric) platform. It enhances the vehicle’s performance, rigidity, NVH, and safety aspects.
Turbocharged engine offering class-leading fuel efficiency
The Ativa SUV is Perodua’s first turbocharged vehicle, in line with the global downsized forced-induction trend. The 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbo mill generates a maximum output of 98 PS at 6,000 rpm and a peak torque of 140 Nm from 2,400 to 4,000 rpm. It has a class-leading rated fuel efficiency of 18.9 kmpl.
D-CVT gearbox
The new Perodua Ativa uses a CVT gearbox, called D-CVT (Dual-Mode CVT). According to the company, it is the world’s first split-gear CVT system that integrates a belt drive with a gear drive for better acceleration, fuel efficiency, and quietness. This is for the first time a Perodua model gets a continuously variable transmission system.
Level 2 semi-autonomous driving
The top-spec trim also gets lane keep control (LDC) and adaptive cruise control (ADC), combinedly offer Level 2 semi-autonomous driving to the SUV at just RM 71,200, So far, the Perodua Ativa is the cheapest car in Malaysia offering this advanced feature. The ACC system enables the driver to fix the car's accelerator at a specific speed and take the foot off the pedal. As for the Ativa, this system works only between 30 to 125 kmph speed levels.
Advanced Safety Assist
On the safety front, the new Ativa has the brand’s Advanced Safety Assist 3.0 as a standard feature. It includes a pre-collision warning, pre-collision braking (automatic emergency braking), front departure alert, and pedal misoperation control. The upgraded version can now detect two-wheelers, on top of the pedestrians and cars in ASA 2.0, also it can now detect cars at night. The pre-collision braking system can also operate at higher speeds of up to 120 kmph as compared to 80 kmph in the previous version.

Lane Departure Warning and Prevention
As a standard appointment, the SUV gets Lane Departure Warning (LDW) and Lane Departure Prevention (LDP), which is quite impressive at such an affordable price tag. The LDW warns the driver when the car begins to move out of the lane while LDP helps the driver to go back to the lane after the warning.
9.0-inch floating touchscreen infotainment display
The Ativa’s functional dashboard boasts an advanced infotainment system that displays information on a floating 9-inch touchscreen display. It supports voice commands as well as SmartLink phone mirroring allowing users to connect their Android gadgets with the system.
7-inch Digital instrument cluster
Again a Perodua-first is the 7-inch digital instrument panel comprising four different display themes. Additional features available in this panel are three turn signal tones and a reminder for birthdays or anniversaries.
Spacious boot
When it comes to a car for the family, storage is an essential prerequisite, and the compact SUV does not lag in this parameter also. The Ativa’s boot space measures 369 litres with a floor divided into two levels - 303 litres at the upper level and 66 litres at the lower level where a full-size spare tyre can fit it. The boot can be accessed through a keyless sensor located at the back.
Summing up
In a nutshell, we can say that the new Perodua Ativa is a completely modern and safe SUV available at an eyebrow-raising price tag. It has the potential to make new sales records for the Malaysian car brand.
