Out from the teaser to Geneva Show, arrives the BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe
KUALA LUMPUR: Just a week ago, BMW Group tweeted a teaser image of a stylish car that many suspected to be the BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe. And now that the 2018 Geneva International Motor Show finally opens its doors, we got to see the greenish-bluish beauty live, gracing the BMW arena.
Yes, it is an extension of the BMW 8 Series, and with the visible M treatment, we are pretty sure it would replace the existing M6 Gran Coupe. Though what is currently on display is the concept version, according to the company officials, the production model will go under making in 2019.
Seeing the car in person, we realised it is a tone down version of the one seen in the teaser. On the front is present a wide hood that is accompanied by the revised version of BMW’s signature kidney grille, sharp headlights infused with laser light technology and wapping upfront is the faux honeycomb air intakes, known as the Air Breathers. On the side are present unique pair of rear windows, flared wheel arches, and ‘Hoffmeister Kink’ pronounced four-door. The rear gets L-shaped tail light, curved roofline, and sleek rear boot lid
As for its under the hood configuration, we are expecting to see a twin-turbo V8 option that is featured in the all-new BMW M5.
The company’s official statement further reveals that the production model of the 8 Series Gran Coupe will be based on the BMW OKL platform. The said platform will provide the new Gran Coupe with a strong body structure that would be a mix of elements like steel, aluminum, magnesium, and carbon fiber.
We are expecting the BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe production model to arrive in mid or late 2019. Meaning that it's not before 2020 that the new 8 Series would be available to the buyers.
