New Toyota Veloz/Avanza: An MPV with a strong safety shield

KUALA LUMPUR: Toyota's first car assessed under the new & stricter ASEAN NCAP 2021-2025 assessment protocol is none other than the 2022 Veloz, known as the Avanza in Malaysia. The MPV secured an impressive 5-star safety rating with a total score of 79.99 points.

The safety assessment program has been categorised into four segments, in which the Toyota Veloz grabbed the following scores.

• Adult Occupant Protection (AOP) – 34.88 points
• Child Occupant Protection (COP) – 17.17 points
• Safety Assist (SAT) – 16.03 points
• Motorcyclists Safety (MS) – 11.92 points

It's worth noting that the MPV tested by the ASEAN NCAP is manufactured in Indonesia, and the Japanese automaker retails in different South ASEAN countries, including Brunei, Thailand, and Vietnam. 

So what safety features ensure the safety of passengers inside the 2022 Veloz?

The 7-seater car is equipped with six airbags, an anti-lock braking system, electronic brakeforce distribution, brake assist, electronic stability control, seat belt reminder (front & rear), pedestrian protection tech, autonomous emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring system, and rear cross-traffic alert. 

With the Premium trims, the Toyota Safety Sense ADAS suite is also on offer that incorporates advanced systems like a pre-collision system, automatic high beam, front departure alert, lane departure assist, and pedal misoperation control. Further, raising the safety quotient of the new Veloz MPV is a 360-degree panoramic view monitor.

“MPV is among one of the most popular [means> of transport in ASEAN. The extra passenger seats offer [convenience> to road users as it is able to transport more people in a journey,” said ASEAN NCAP Secretary-General and Acting Chairman Dr. Khairil Anwar Abu Kassim.

“This is because ASEAN families normally make up more than the average household size, which includes extended family members such as grandparents. Thus, we are proud that Toyota has equipped its new MPV with safety technologies that we find necessary to ensure not only the safety of its occupants but also other vulnerable road users,” added Dr. Kassim.

Closer to home, Toyota has discontinued the Avanza in Malaysia. However, it is likely to be succeeded by the new Veloz in the coming months.
