New entry-level Volvo V40 to get a higher ride-height
KUALA LUMPUR: Volvo, one of the premium auto brands, will soon exit from the conventional hatchback segment, though those are still popular in the European market. Currently, the Swedish auto giant has its presence in the segment with the V40. Now, the manufacturer is planning to replace it with a higher-riding model.
The Volvo V40 looks like the final model and underpins Ford’s platform (Focus). The manufacturer said that the next-gen V40 will be based on the CMA platform, Volvo develops it along with Geely. The platform underpins the Lynk & Co models and the XC40 compact SUV.
Lex Kerssemakers, Europe Chief for Volvo said that the manufacturer had taken this step as buyers favour higher seating position.
This means, placing a large capacity battery will be possible without any problem, thanks to the taller ride-height. Kerssemakers also added that it would not be possible to reach the required 300-kilometre driving range if the engineers used the old compact hatchback platform.
Volvo showcased two concept vehicle for its 40 series - the 40.1 and the 40.2, in the year 2016. While the XC40 is based on the first concept model, it is expected that the next-gen V40 will be based on the 40.2 concept.
A traditional 3-box sedan is what the Concept 40.2 carries. The concept comes with much better ground clearance. The bumper at both ends are much like the SUV models, and black trimming is given to the wheel arches.
However, the next-generation Volvo V40 will still be an entry-model for the manufacturer. As the carmaker needs a product soon with a low price tag so that it can achieve the projected sales target of 800,000 units by 2020.
