KUALA LUMPUR: The arrival of Proton's first ever electric vehicle must be getting closer and closer as Proton New Energy Technology Sdn Bhd (PRO-NET), a subsidiary of Perusahaan Otomobil Nasional Sdn Bhd, announces a new contest inviting Malaysians to decode and guess the name of their upcoming electric vehicle.

The Proton electric vehicle Brand Naming Contest marks the approach of PROTON's first electric vehicle launch, inline with the company's commitment to spur on automotive innovation in Malaysia.

It seems like Proton is following a long-standing tradition, because they are inviting Malaysians to suggest a name for its first electric vehicle (EV) brand. This follows the precedent set by the naming of PROTON's first car, the SAGA, which was named by a Malaysian. Unlike the SAGA, this contest focuses on naming an entire brand rather than just a model, which indicates that PROTON is establishing a sub-brand specifically for its EVs.

Given that PRO-NET is organizing the contest, it's likely that the new EV will be sold through PRO-NET's dealer network, aligning with the specialized needs of electric vehicle sales and service.

Proton's recent focus on developing its first electric vehicle (EV) is underscored by the inauguration of a new R&D facility in China, in collaboration with Geely (Zhejiang Geely Holding Ltd), complementing its existing facilities in Malaysia.

This new center aims to strengthen synergies between Proton’s in-house expertise and Geely's resources, facilitating knowledge transfer and driving innovation for customer-centric products. By leveraging combined expertise from engineers in both countries, Proton intends to develop advanced vehicle integration, intelligent driving, and project management solutions, enhancing its model lineup and competitiveness.

The facility will also serve as a platform for connecting with capable vendors and supporting the development of the Automotive Hi-Tech Valley in Tanjong Malim.
