More details on the Volkswagen Project Trinity are out
KUALA LUMPUR: On one hand, Volkswagen is working hard for expanding its ID range of electric vehicles, while on the other, it has something in hand for the firm’s next-gen bespoke electric cars, which is codenamed as Project Trinity. According to the company, this revolutionary EV will have a new EV platform that will underpin many new vehicles of the Volkswagen AG; it will have semi-autonomous driving capabilities and will set new benchmarks for driving range and charging speeds in the automotive industry.
Last month, Volkswagen officially teased the new EV and now Autocar reported some more key information about it. As per that, the upcoming vehicle will be based on the brand’s new Scalable Systems Platform (SSP) and will have an interesting body style, said to be a blend of hatchback, crossover, and sedan. The company has described the style as a four-door saloon, however, sources suggest that it will be a stylish Sportback with a long, sloping coupé-style roof for aerodynamic efficiency and interior space. The upcoming vehicle’s length is expected to be identical to the ID 4 SUV.
The publication also reported that while buying the Trinity model, the customers will get only a few customisable options in case of hardware, but as far as the software is concerned, there will a number of features on offer. Customers will also be able to unlock the desired features through over-the-air software updates. Furthermore, Project Trinity will initially have Level 2 self-driving assistance, but eventually, it would be offering Level 4 autonomy to the buyers. This means that during longer journeys, it would be driving itself on motorways carrying all necessary infrastructure.
Volkswagen boss Ralf Brandstätter said: “If Trinity is self-driving on the motorway, then what are you doing in that car? The passenger compartment of Trinity will be geared towards the needs of people to make use of that extra time.”
Due in 2026, the Volkswagen Project Trinity is likely to cost approximately €35,000 (RM 173,339 according to current exchange rates). It will underpin vehicles across the Volkswagen AG subsidiaries including Cupra, Bentley, Ducati, and Man.
