Modified Lexus GX 550 Overtrail previewed at Tokyo Auto Salon 2024

KUALA LUMPUR: Ahead of its official launch, the 2024 Lexus GX is generating buzz with modified and accessorised versions. The latest is the Lexus GX 550 Overtrail previewed at Tokyo Auto Salon 2024. It is a unique luxury off-road SUV concept that Lexus co-developed with JAOS (Japanese off-road vehicle specialist) to offer overland and off-grid adventures.

The modified luxury off-road SUV is bigger and more imposing than the donor car. From its authentic off-road appearance to its dynamic performance, every aspect of the vehicle has elevated.

The front has a rugged bumper, a hallmark of robust off-road vehicles, which is reproduced using lightweight and highly rigid ABS resin. Also, the vehicle is kitted with various standard off-road components such as - 

• Fender garnishes to protect the broad and impressive fenders
• Aluminium skid plates to cover vulnerable underbody areas
• Tube-type side steps to protect the side sills while facilitating convenient entry and exit
• Large mudguards to safeguard the vehicle's body from debris when navigating off-road terrain

The Lexus GX 550 Overtrail JAOS edition also boasts lightweight yet highly rigid 18-inch wheels, a roof rack for increased carrying capacity, and an additional locking rear differential system.

The modified GX powertrain details remain undisclosed. Nevertheless, we can refer to the standard model, featuring a 3.4-litre twin-turbocharged V6 engine, generating an impressive 349 hp and 650 Nm of torque. The power is sent to the wheels via a 10-speed automatic gearbox that allows the vehicle to tow up to 3,629 kg. Also part of the kit is a full-time four-wheel drive system and an electronically controlled transfer case.
