Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV gets updates for 2021
KUALA LUMPUR: Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is one of the best-selling plug-in hybrid SUVs in the world, which embodies the Japanese automaker’s expertise in electrification, SUV, and all-wheel control technologies. A few days back, Mitsubishi gave a major overhaul to its standard model in the global market and now it has come up with upgrades for the plug-in hybrid crossover in the US. Although the new Outlander PHEV looks no different in the latest iteration unlike the revamped Outlander, it benefits from an upgraded powertrain and a bigger battery.
The new Outlander PHEV incorporates a more powerful and efficient 2.4-litre internal combustion engine generating a maximum output of 126 hp and a peak torque of 200 Nm. The engine is now paired with a more powerful 70-kW rear-axle-mounted electric motor in place of the 60-kW unit. These changes increased the total system output to 221 hp, up 31 hp from the previous model.
Mitsubishi also increased the main drive battery capacity of the Outlander PHEV. It now has a capacity of 13.8 kW/h instead of 12.0 kW/h, resulting in an increase of all-electric range from 22 to 24 miles. Not only this, but the upgrade also increased the top speed of all-electric operation from 79 mph to 83 mph.
Also new for 2021 is updated software for PHEV’s powertrain, which improves synchronization between battery and engine, and reduces overall noise, vibration and harshness. In addition to power and range updates, the plug-in hybrid crossover also gets a few drivetrain changes, including two new driving modes - Sport and Snow for better driving confidence and control in all driving situations.
For 2021, Mitsubishi also added a new trim in the SUV’s existing lineup of two variants. The new LE guise features an added sporty visual appeal with enhancements like a standard sunroof blacked-out grille, dark chrome dual spoke 18-inch alloy wheels, and a special blackout front and rear bumper design.
In terms of safety, all the Outlander PHEV trims come standard with forward collision mitigation with pedestrian detection, blind spot warning with lane change assist, lane departure warning, and automatic high Beam driver-assist systems.
The updated Outlander PHEV is now available at Mitsubishi US showrooms at a starting price of $36,295 (RM 146,684).
