Mitsubishi Motors production, sales, & export down
KUALA LUMPUR: Mitsubishi Motors just announced its FY2019-2020 figures, and the numbers are down across the board. The reason, current pandemic crisis.
For the first time in three years, MMC (Mitsubishi Motors Corporation) has reported a fall in exports, production, and sales in Japan. In the financial year 2019-2020, MMC produced 1,337,399 vehicles (both passenger and commercial vehicles). Same period last year, it sold 1,441,227 vehicles, including hatchbacks, SUVs, crossovers, and pickups, so 103,828 units less. Thus, putting Mitsubishi down by 7.2% in global production compared to the previous year.
The last six months were not very kind for this Japanese automaker, and the pandemic made things even worse. From April 2019 to March 2020, Mitsubishi produced 1,337,399 vehicles, of which 620,676 were built in Japan, and the rest 716,723 made outside the home country. These figures placed Mitsubishi Japan and overseas production down by 6.1% and 8.2%, respectively.
The automaker reported a decline in vehicle production over the past six months; also, the overseas output is down for the past five months. In its home country Japan, the sales have been sliding since October 2019.
All being said, there is a bright side to the story as well. MMC reported that its March 2020 production in Japan is up by 14.3% compared to the same period last year. Besides, the automaker experienced a positive year on year change in export that is up by 8.9%, so it’s not all dull for the brand. Perhaps once the pandemic subsides, Mitsubishi might dust itself off and make a strong comeback soon.
