Mitsubishi launches 2020 Xpander facelift

KUALA LUMPUR: Japanese Automobile behemoth Mitsubishi Motors has launched the upgraded 2020 Xpander multipurpose vehicle (MPV) with cosmetic updates. The company, instead of any major changes, has opted to lend the Xpander minor exterior enhancements and a new set of alloy wheels. The changes cover almost all the trims including the standard GLX, GLS, Exceed, Sport and Ultimate models.

The fascia of the upgraded Xpander gets a slight makeover which Mitsubishi prefers to call a ‘more dynamic’ grille. It sports a larger Mitsubishi emblem and reshaped louvers that swing upwards. Behind the grille, all trims come with dual horns.

The Minato-headquartered company has retained the same engine of the current Xpander in the upgraded version. It will be hauled by a naturally aspirated 1.5-litre motor producing 104PS of maximum power at 6,000rpm and 141Nm of peak torque at 4,000rpm. The engine will be mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox with a 4-speed automatic transmission (AT) available as an option.

The GLS and Exceed models of the upgraded Xpander will get a piano black treatment for the grille. The kit of these two trims will now comprise two-tone alloy wheels, a shark fin antenna, reverse sensors, and a rear defogger. The Xpander’s Sport version will get a chrome grille and a reverse camera, while the latter will be included in the Ultimate version.

The cabin of the Ultimate and Exceed trim will have beige coloured seats while the Sport version would have a revised black pattern. The silver and wooden trims of the Exceed and Ultimate trim respectively have also been redesigned. A 7.0-inch touchscreen heads-up display dominates the dashboard in the Sport and Ultimate. Other than these updates, the 2020 Mitsubishi Xpander largely remains unchanged. The Sport version, however, will get steering wheel-mounted audio control functions.

Pictures of the upgraded Xpander’s pre-production model, being tested by Mitsubishi officials at Hicom Automotive’s Pahang plant, appeared on the internet last month. As for Xpander's arrival in Malaysia, we are yet to hear an official announcement. However, as per our judgment, the Xpander should arrive before the year-end with an estimated price tag of RM 78,968.
