MG Cyberster revealed; launch slated for next year

KUALA LUMPUR: Just a few days after the leak, the MG Cyberster EV has made its official debut at the Auto Shanghai 2023. First unveiled in a concept form back in 2020, the Cyberster marks the brand's return to the convertible segment after a hiatus of three decades since the launch of the MG F in 1990. It is also one of the few non-luxury electric sports cars on the market.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • What are the key design highlights of the MG Cyberster?

Just like a conventional roadster, the MG Cyberster features a long bonnet, a two-seater cabin, and a relatively short tail. Adding to its eye-catching appearance are scissor doors.
  • What powertrains will be offered with the MG Cyberster?

While MG is yet to announce the EV’s powertrain details, China’s MIIT official filling leak tells us that it will be offered in single-motor RWD and dual-motor AWD options.

The EV retains the proportions of a conventional roadster with a long bonnet, a two-seater cabin, and a relatively short tail. The silhouette is clean and gently flows into the deck; the latter incorporates unique black plastic elements.

The MG Cyberster is kitted with fender-mounted headlights, an electronically folding fabric roof, distinctive LED tail lights combining thin light bars, 20-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels, and eye-catchy doors that open outwards and upwards in a ‘scissor’ style.

Echoing the striking red hue, the red-themed interior exudes a futuristic feel. It features a two-seating layout, touch-sensitive controls on the centre stack, and a curved digital panel.

While introducing the Cyberster, Carl Gotham, Advanced Design Director of MG’s Marylebone design studio in London, said, “Our intention was to create a completely new roadster ready for a new generation of sportscar drivers and which opens a bold and compelling new chapter for MG,” said Carl Gotham, Advanced Design Director of the company’s Marylebone design studio in London.”

“The focus for Cyberster was to create a design that was respectful of the brand’s illustrious past and to bring back that sporting bloodline, while also being absolutely clear that it should be modern and forward-facing like the MG of today, completely in-tune with the rapid transition to electric vehicles,” he added.

MG is yet to announce the technical details of the Cyberster EV. However, China’s MIIT official filling leak tells us that the EV will be offered in single-motor RWD and dual-motor AWD options, with power outputs rated at 314 PS and 544 PS, respectively.
