Meet Volkswagen’s new off-road EV concept, the ID Xtreme
KUALA LUMPUR: The all-electric journey of the German marque Volkswagen kickstarted with the introduction of the ID range, which presently includes ID.3, ID.4, and various other models including the battery-powered minivan ID. “The modular electric drive matrix (MEB) has enormous technical potential,” says Silke Bagschik, Head of the MEB Product Line. “For many of our customers, vehicles are much more than just a means of transport. With the ID. XTREME, we are raising electric mobility from VW to a new performance level.”
The Volkswagen ID Xtreme concept benefits from several key modifications for rugged appearance and outstanding capabilities. These include -
- Raised rally running gears
- 18-inch off-road wheels and chunky off-road tyres
- A modified crash member with an additional bumper and 50 mm wider wings created by 3D printing, lending the vehicle an authentic off-road look
- A roof carrier with LED lights
- An aluminium underbody for protecting the battery
- A unique sound generator added to the wheel housings producing a signature driving noise
- Inside, there are Alcantara trimmings all around with a revamped upholstery and orange accents
As for the power boost, the EV gets an uprated rear motor and software revisions for the drive unit. The modifications resulted in increasing the system’s power to 475 hp (88 hp more than the GTX's 387 hp). While the automaker remained tight-lipped on the EV’s range, it is mostly likely to be impacted by the higher power figure.
