Meet the 'Ultimate GT-spec Ute', VW Amarok W580 by Walkinshaw

KUALA LUMPUR: The Volkswagen Amarok has been around for quite some time now and badly requires an update. For making it happen, VW Commercial Vehicles have joined hands with Ford that'll help it develop second-gen Amarok sooner than later. Though much is not known, the upcoming truck will be based on the Ranger platform and is expected to arrive by 2022. As for now, VW Australia came together with Walkinshaw to create a beefier version of the Amarok.

Ryan Davies, director of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles Australia said, "We have always known what a powerhouse we have in the Amarok, but have always felt the range needed a proper GT-spec model. As the originators of the performance ute category, we looked no further than Walkinshaw to achieve this."

Named the W580, which is a mix of the Aussi aftermarket brand and the amount to torque the ute produces. This special edition model is powered by a turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 diesel engine that makes a maximum power of 268 hp along with a peak torque of 580 Nm. The mill is coupled to an 8-speed automatic gearbox with 4Motion permanent 4WD system.

The W850 is based on the flagship Amarok sold in Australia with Walkinshaw throwing in some performance-enhancing bits like suspension tune with front axle lifted by 40 mm for greater ground clearance. The special edition also gets new Pirelli Scorpion 275/50 R20 tyres that wrap the exclusive 20-inch 'Clayton' wheels.

Also, Walkinshaw added a custom dual exhaust system with side exits underneath the rear bumper. Changes can also be seen on the front grille that's been modified to differential from the standard Amarok. Further included in the list of W850 goodies are - Bi-xenon headlight, body-coloured moulded sports bar, LED fog lights, graphic decals, and an individually numbered plaque in the cabin.

Julian Quincey, chief designer at Walkinshaw said, “The Volkswagen product seems to lend itself to a very high performance, GT image. You’ve got that terrific V6 diesel engine with class-leading torque, and it really does deserve a performance flagship in the range.”

Also, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles Australia has announced that first 30 customers will benefit from "an all-expenses-paid, money-can't-buy, 'exclusive Walkinshaw experience’, which includes all flights, transfers, meals, and accommodation to attend a Walkinshaw factory tour and a Walkinshaw Andretti United track day."

The VW Amarok W580 will go on sale on 1st December 2020; the price tag will be disclosed at the same time.
