Meet BYD’s new electric hatchback, the Seagull

KUALA LUMPUR: The Chinese EV maker BYD made its debut in Malaysia with the launch of the Atto 3 and the preview of the Dolphin and Seal back in December. While the latter two are expected to land on local shores soon, the marque has pulled the wraps off its latest EV in the form of the Seagull at the ongoing Auto Shanghai 2023 in China.

The BYD Seagull is the smallest electric vehicle from BYD yet; it will first enter the Chinese market before being made available in other regions around the world. 

Let’s get to know the key highlights of BYD’s new EV in detail -

• The BYD Seagull is a five-door four-seat EV based on the brand’s e-Platform 3.0
• It measures 3780 mm in length, 1715 mm in width, and 1540 mm in height and spans a 2500-mm long wheelbase. Compared to the Dolphin, it is 345 mm shorter, 55 mm narrower, and 30 mm lower 

• BYD offers the EV in two configurations - a 55-kW electric motor producing a maximum power of 73 bhp and a 70-kW motor with a rated output of 94 bhp
• The car’s top speed is pegged at 130 kmph
• Battery options comprise - 30 kWh and 38 kWh, offering a driving range of 305 km and 405 km, respectively on the CLTC cycle
• For charging, the EV supports a fast charging system, which allows it to charge from 30% to 80% within 30 minutes

• In terms of design, the BYD Seagull looks cool with a tall-boy silhouette, sharp-looking clusters for LED headlights, aggressively styled bumpers, and connected tail lights
• The EV rides on striking five-spoke alloy wheels
• The quirky interior of the Seagull hatchback is kitted with a layered dashboard housing a 5-inch instrument panel, a flat-bottom steering wheel, and a 12.8-inch infotainment unit
• Also part of the kit are a wireless charging pad, power-adjustable driver’s seat, and two cup holders

The all-new BYD Seagull price in the Chinese market starts at CNY 78,000, which is approximately equal to RM 50,151.
