Mazda’s first electric car to make its debut at Tokyo motor show

KUALA LUMPUR: Japanese multinational automobile manufacturer, Mazda, has confirmed the debut of its first electric car at the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show.

Moreover, it is the brand's first production EV as well. They have even announced that the EV will come with an entirely new design and also an exclusive platform. If you are wondering how it would look like, then you can check out the e-TPV. It is the concept EV that the carmaker has recently revealed. Moreover, this prototype is based on the CX-30, so it can be expected that the production model might share some specs with CX-30.

The carmaker said, "Mazda Motor Corporation will showcase the world premiere of its first mass-production battery electric vehicle at the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show. A completely new model, the EV will be the third instalment in the automaker's new-generation lineup. Developed in accordance with Mazda's human-centric philosophy and making full use of the benefits of electric drive technology, it offers performance drivers can enjoy effortlessly and whole-heartedly."

Talking about the powertrain, the Mazda e-TPV came equipped with a 35.5 kWh battery, which is capable enough to churn out a maximum power of 140 hp (105 kW) and a peak torque of 264 Nm.

The source states that the upcoming Mazda EV will be offered in two forms — one with a range extender and another one with a fully electric version. In addition to that, the full EV will make its presence in the market of Japan, Europe, and China. However, the RE model can make its appearance in markets where daily commutes are longer such as North America. This range extender model might mark the comeback of the rotary motor at Mazda.
