Mazda USA says goodbye to the CX-3 and 6 sedan

KUALA LUMPUR: When we think of affordable fun-to-drive cars, Mazda is the first name that comes to mind. In the past few years, the Japanese automaker has expanded its portfolio with the CX-5, CX-8, CX-3, CX-4, and the CX-30 that attracted a lot of attention. But, here it seems something is wrong with the two of its models, the CX-3 and 6 sedan, in the US. The automaker has just announced the discontinuation of these two cars in the concerned market.

Mazda press release reads, "For more than 100 years, Mazda has successfully navigated shifting consumer needs and an ever-changing industry with beautifully designed vehicles that are fun to drive. As consumer interests continue to evolve, Mazda will discontinue CX-3 and Mazda 6 for the 2022 model year,"

The automaker further says, "Although these two vehicles will be leaving our lineup, we are proud of the performance, design, quality, and safety they contributed to our brand.”

Looking in the past, Mazda introduced the CX-3 in the US back in 2015 to leverage the fast-growing market for small and budget crossovers. Later. the company gave it a mid-life update in 2018 and then again in 2020. This means it was around for one generation only.

Based on the Mazda 2 platform, the CX-3 features a Skyactiv-G engine under the bonnet, which generates a maximum power of 146 hp and a peak torque of 200 Nm. The 2021 model is on sale in two variants - Touring and Grand Touring trims at a price starting from $20,790 (RM 86,034) before destination and handling,

Mazda 6 sedan

On the other hand, the Mazda 6 sedan has been on sale in the country for nearly two decades. The ongoing third-generation was introduced back in 2012 with a 184 hp 2.5-litre mill. It received the first facelift in 2018, adding the 250hp V6 engine for top-spec variants. It is currently priced at $24,475 (RM 101,283).

Well, if we look at the local market, the two models are doing fine, in fact, the 6 sedan has received updates just a few days back. But after seeing the Mazda US decision to axe these two models without much warning, we never know what the automaker has on cards for other markets.
