Mazda Unveils MX-5 Speedster and Spyder at SEMA 2015

Kuala Lumpur: Mazda has brought two of its concept cars to the ongoing SEMA trade show in Las Vegas dubbed as MX-5 Speedster and MX-5 Spyder. Both the models are concept versions of the 2015 Mazda MX-5. Designed by Mazda's North American designers, these concepts have undergone several modifications under their guidance and are inspired by vintage roadsters as well. Further, both of them aim towards the core of the lightweight, open-air basis of the Miata.

Talking about the MX-5 Speedster, the windscreen and roof are both ditched for a simple wind deflector while carbon-fibre doors and a new rear deck design also feature. Whole of the exterior is wrapped in Blue Ether paint. Thanks to its K&W adjustable coilover suspension, the height is lowered by 30 mm. At the rear end, it receives a centre-mounted exhaust as well. Further, the car rides on 16-inch wheels which are custom RAYS 57 Extreme Gram Lights wrapped with Kumho Ecsta V710 225/50/R16 tyres. Inside, it has been trimmed in Alcantara cabin which helps to reduce the unsprung weight to just 943 kg, 113 kg less than the standard US-spec car.

The MX-5 Spyder concept is a bit different as Mazda calls it “a more sophisticated interpretation of the classic vintage roadster”. As compared to Speedster, it is less extreme in terms of weight loss. Wrapped in Mercury Silver paint, it receives a brown top stretched overhead. Further, it also features a carbon-fibre aero kit, grille intake and body tonneau cover. This car is anchored to 17-inch Yokohama ADVAN Racing RS II wheels which are surrounded by tires measuring 225/45/R17 along with Brembo four pistons at the front. Inside, it gets trimmed in 'Prima' natural leather along with start/stop engine button embossed on the centre console.

Under the hood, both the cars would be powered by SkyActiv-G 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine which churns out a maximum power of 155 hp along with a peak torque of 200 Nm.
