Mazda trademarked a new ‘R’ logo, but for what?
KUALA LUMPUR: The mysterious R logo you see above has recently surfaced on the internet that has fuelled a lot of speculations. As per the report of the New Nissan Z forum, the logo has been trademarked by Japanese car marque Mazda with the Japan Patent Office for use in a wide variety of potential applications, including ‘automobiles and their parts and fittings.’
While there is no official information on this, the market expects that something big is going to happen. The Mazda R badge could represent a complete new range of the brand’s high-performance vehicles, with turbo or electrified iterations of the models like the CX-5 and 6. However, the fact that Volkswagen already sells high-performance models under the R badge, makes this quite unlikely at the same time. Also, Mazda has earlier refused the plans of rolling out any performance sub-brand.

Then there is a possibility that Mazda may use the new trademarked logo for the SkyActiv R rotary engine models. It’s no secret that the brand is developing a new rotary engine for its hybrid range-extender vehicles, and the first model to come out with this new tech is the Mazda MX-30. According to the automaker, its development is on track with an expected launch in 2022.
The Mazda new logo consists of a stylized ‘R’ with red, blue, and white colors. It has a racy look and pundits with a red triangle on its right, which might symbolize the brand’s rotary engine. The said engine powered the Mazda RX-3, RX-4, RX-7, and RX-8 sports cars. Thus, it is a bit logical to speculate that the new R logo hints at the arrival of the RX-Vision or RX-9.
Well, these are just speculations, only time will tell if any of these will actually come true or not. At the moment, we can be sure of one thing that it will be something exciting.
