Mazda MX-30 latest update: Previewed in Malaysia; gets a mild bump in charging speed

KUALA LUMPUR: Mazda Malaysia has already previewed the MX-30 EV and by the looks of it, the car seems like a promising addition to the local lineup. While there’s still some time in MX-30’s local launch, the EV has been getting its fair share of updates globally. For instance, the Europe-spec MX-30 recently benefited from a charging speed bump and a few other mild revisions.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • When will new Mazda MX-30 EV arrive in Malaysia?

The Mazda crossover EV will enter Malaysia in the coming months, probably in Q4 2022.
  • Will the Mazda MX-30 EV lineup get a new varaint in the future?

In the upcoming months, Mazda’s electric crossover lineup will get a rotary-engine range-extender model that will offer a 200 km + range.
  • 2022 Mazda MX-30 update

For the model year 2022, the Europe-spec Mazda MX-30’s three-phase AC charging is now supported at up to 11 kW, up from the previous 6.6 kW. As for DC fast charging support it has increased from 40 kW to 50 kw.

Mazda claims that with the DC fast charger, the new MX-30 now needs just 26 minutes to charge from 10 to 80 percent, i.e., 10 minutes faster than before.

In addition, the 2022 MX-30 also gets a revised drivetrain sound. This new sound is supposed to help the driver “recognise the amount of torque being generated by the power unit”. Mazda has also optimised the frequency to make the electric crossover sound more like other cars (wind and road noise).

No revisions have been made on the battery front, the EV comes equipped with the same 35.5 kW unit. Meaning while there’s no hike in the range (200 km), the customer would benefit from a speedy charge.

What does the future hold for the MX-30 EV?

In the upcoming months, Mazda’s electric crossover lineup will get a rotary-engine range-extender model that will offer a 200 km + range.

Also, as mentioned, the EV will enter new markets, like Malaysia in the coming months, probably in Q4 2022.
