KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • How much power does the Mazda CX-60 have?

Mazda CX-60 is the brand’s first-ever plug-in hybrid car that comes with a 2.5-litre four-cylinder Skyactiv-G petrol engine mated to an electric motor. Combinedly, the setup makes 327 PS and 500 Nm, the highest in the history of Mazda road cars.
  • What are the rivals of the Mazda CX-60?

Mazda CX-60 PHEV rivals the likes of the BMW X3 PHEV, Volvo XC60 PHEV, and Audi Q5 PHEV.
  • Mazda’s most powerful car ever

It is crucial to note that the new Mazda CX-60 is a full-size, five-seater SUV that is powered by a plug-in hybrid engine. This is the first time that Mazda rolled a model equipped with a plug-in hybrid drivetrain. It pairs a 2.5-litre four-cylinder Skyactiv-G petrol engine with an electric motor and a 17.8-kWh battery pack.

The engine delivers a maximum power output of 192 PS and a peak torque of 261 Nm, while the e-motor is good for delivering 136 PS and 250 Nm. Combinedly, the setup makes 327 PS and 500 Nm, the highest in the history of Mazda road cars.

Thus, it means the new Mazda CX-60 is not only the brand’s first-ever plug-in hybrid but it’s also the most powerful road car Mazda has ever created.

On the transmission front, the plug-in hybrid is mated to an eight-speed automatic gearbox that sends power to the ground, allowing the SUV to run from naught to 100 kmph in just 5.8 seconds. Mazda CX-60's top speed is electronically limited at 200 kmph.

    Rivals against the premium SUVs

Mazda has placed the stylish and classy CX-60 in the segment which is dominated by premium brands like BMW, Audi, and Volvo. To be precise, it rivals the likes of the BMW X3 PHEV, Volvo XC60 PHEV, and Audi Q5 PHEV. All these branded SUVs are offered with plug-in hybrid mills, good looks, and an amazing set of features. It would be interesting to see how the Mazda CX-60 will make its space in the segment to change the equations.

    Shape of Mazdas to come

The new Mazda CX-60 is also the brand’s first vehicle to ride on its new platform ‘Multi-Solution Scalable Architecture’ that will also underpin the upcoming Mazda cars. Designed from the ground up, the RWD architecture gets a double-wishbone front suspension and a multilink rear setup. According to the automaker, it features the same Kinetic Posture Control antiroll tech available on the MX-5 Miata. However, an all-wheel-drive system with torque vectoring is a part of the kit for now, and RWD models will join the range in the future.

Latest evolution of the ‘Kodo’ design philosophy

Further, the CX-60 benefits from the latest evolution of the brand’s ‘Kodo’ design language. Following the concept of ‘Noble Toughness,”  the philosophy focuses on simplicity and reflective surfacing.

This can be seen in the form of a deeply sculpted front fascia, sharp grooves, and side sills. While most of the design remains clutter-free, Mazda has given a subtle twist in the rear bodywork with a pair of elongated tail lights, quad exhaust tips, and a roof spoiler. It is also expected that the upcoming CX-70 and CX-80 will be sharing the design cues with the CX-60.

As we mentioned above, the CX-60 lies in the category of premium SUVs. Proving that right is its plush cabin that is kitted with high-quality materials and textures. From maple wood trim to woven textiles, and chrome details, the interior space just looks fab.
