Mazda brings back the rotary engine with the 2023 MX-30 R-EV

KUALA LUMPUR: Yes, you read it just right, Mazda’s rotary engine is back on the shelf with the all-new 2023 MX-30 R-EV. However, unlike in the last RX like the RX-3, RX-7, and RX-8, here the rotary mill serves as a generator.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • What's new with the Mazda MX-30's rotary engine?

Unlike in the last RX like the RX-3, RX-7, and RX-8, here the rotary mill serves as a generator.
  • Will the new Mazda MX-30 R-EV have a special edition model?

Yes. Part of the deal is a special edition model called the ‘Edition R’ which features a black exterior, Maroon Rouge Metallic cabin trim along with a rotor-shaped emblem on the sat headrests and floor mats.
  • The EV made its debut at the Brussels Motor Show last weekend with its battery-electric vehicle stablemate, the MX-30, launched back in 2022.

    Let’s get to know the 2023 Mazda MX-30 R-EV in detail -

    • The MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV is a series plug-in hybrid with an 85 km battery electric driving range. Also, the entire driving range is motor-powered
    • The new rotary engine for the MX-30 R-EV powers the generator system and is positioned on the same axle as a high-output motor and a generator in the motor room

    • Also, part of the car’s mechanical setup is a 17.7 kWh lithium-ion battery and a 50-liter petrol tank. The battery offers an electric-only driving range of 85 km
    • The EV can support both normal and fast charging; it comes with a 1,500 W power supply. 3-phase AC charging will take around 50 mins and DC rapid charging can complete one full round in just 25 mins

    • The driver is offered three modes to choose from namely, Normal, Charge, and EV modes
    • There is no mechanical connection between the engine and wheels, so the rotary unit will only act as a generator with the EV always driven by the e-motor

    • The e-motor here generates 170 PS of power and delivers slightly better performance than the 145 PS fully-electric MX-30
    • Talking about the new 8C rotary engine, an 830 cc single rotor with 120 mm rotor radius and 76 mm rotor width. It is 15 kg lighter than the twin-rotor Renesis engine seen in the RX-8

    • The new engine offers reduced emission, enhanced fuel economy, and improved efficiency at low rpm
    • Part of the deal is a special edition model called the ‘Edition R’ which features a black exterior, Maroon Rouge Metallic cabin trim along with a rotor-shaped emblem on the sat headrests and floor mats

Overall, the 2023 Mazda MX-30 EV offers the same engaging, accurate, and relaxed driving experience as the pure-electric MX-30.
