Mazda applied for eight new trademarks with a Wankel-shaped logo
KUALA LUMPUR: Last month, we saw a mysterious R logo reportedly trademarked by Mazda with the Japan Patent Office. The report ignited speculations and rumours, including the likely arrival of a completely new range of the brand’s high-performance vehicles. Amid this, here come some more Mazda trademarks. A Japanese publication, Hatena Blog reported the brand has applied for eight new trademarks.
Out of eight, four are e-SKYACTIV R-Energy, e-SKYACTIV R-HEV, e-SKYACTIV R-EV, and a Wankel-shaped logo that symbolizes a rotor with an integrated "e" alphabet. The other four applications are likely to represent the special edition models or new variants of the ongoing cars.
The design of the logo and reported trademark names clearly suggest that they are related to the automaker's xEV rotary-electric system. Suffixes EV and HEV denote hybrid and pure electric models, although ‘R-Energy’ is hard to decode. It might be related to the recently reported hydrogen-powered rotary which the company is developing for the successor to the RX-8.
A few months ago, a report mentioning that Mazda aims to electrify its 25% fleet by 2030 also surfaced on the internet. All these reports indicate the soon arrival of the rotary-assisted electric range, the first of which could be the MX-30. The EV currently incorporates a 104-kW electric motor delivering 139 horsepower and a 200 km driving range.
Moving to the other four trademarks, which are FIELD JOURNEY, SPORTS APPEARANCE, VS TERRACOTTA SELECTION, and PRO-XROSS STYLE. As per the market speculation, the first two names could represent the special edition versions of the CX-5 or any other Mazda model of the same size.
However, the third one hints at the Miata RF with a terracotta styling as the VS is the code for the MX-5. Last on the list, Mazda PRO-XROSS STYLE seems to be an off-roading trim of an existing model.
Well, these many trademarks signify that the Japanese automaker is geared up to launch a slew of new models in the near future.
