Malaysia Best Selling Cars 2015: Half 1 Analysis
Kuala Lumpur: Proton and Perodua have captured nearly half of the automotive market of Malaysia. Both of these local automakers have posed a tough competition for their international rivals to enter the Malaysian market. Even among these two, Proton has managed to achieve the first position with its Proton Saga and Perodua got the second and third position with its Myvi and Alza respectively. According to data released by the Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA), total new light passenger vehicles sold in the first half of 2015 have been 3,27,778 units which was 1.3% lower as compared to last year.
Regarding the best-selling models, the first half leader was Proton Saga with its 50,382 units being sold. The second best automaker being Perodua has its Myvi on second position with 26,611 units and Alza with 25,386 units sold. In this competitive market, two Japanese automakers Honda and Toyota have also made a place with fourth and fifth positions respectively. Honda city has gained fourth position with 20,775 units sold followed by Toyota Vios on fifth position with 17,501 units sold in first half of the year. Lets have a brief look at these top five winners which are shining throughout the Malaysian automotive market.
1. Proton Saga
This subcompact sedan is available in seven variants in the Malaysian market. Among these variants, one is equipped with a 1.6-litre CamPro IAFM engine carrying four cylinders and is able to churn out a maximum power of 108 hp at 5750 rpm. This engine is further mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. On the other hand, other variants are powered by a 1.4-litre engine of the same line and developes a maximum power of 94 hp at 5750 rpm along with a peak torque of 120 Nm at 4000 rpm. This motor is paired with an advanced five-speed manual transmission and CVT transmission depending on the variant you choose from.

2. Perodua Myvi
Perodua Myvi is a compact 5-door hatchback which was awarded as the best selling car in Malaysia for eight consecutive years from 2006 to 2013. This car is available in two engine variants, a 1.3-litre K3-VE engine and a better 1.5-litre 3SZ-VE engine. Both of these engines are further assisted by a DOHC 16 valve mechanism with DVVT (4 cylinders). The maximum power delivered by Myvi 1.3-litre is 91 PS at 6000 rpm along with 117 Nm of torque at 4400 rpm. The 1.5-litre delivers a power of 103 PS at 6000 rpm and a maximum torque of 136 Nm at 4400 rpm. The 1.3-litre variant is available with both 5-speed manual transmission and 4-speed automatic transmission while the top end Perodua Myvi 1.5 comes with a 4-speed automatic transmission only.

3. Perodua Alza
This car was launched as a beginner MPV and was specially designed for small families. It is available in five variants in the Malaysian market and all the variants are equipped with a 1.5-litre 3SZ-VE DOHC 16 engine. This engine churns out a maximum power of 104 PS at 6000 rpm along with a torque of 136 Nm at 4400 rpm. Two of its variants are coupled with a 5-speed manual transmission while the other three have 4-speed automatic transmission.
4. Honda City
This sedan is manufactured under four variants in Malaysian markets namely Honda City 1.5L, 1.5L S, 1.5L E and 1.5L V. All these engines are powered by a 1.5-litre SOHC i-VTEC petrol engine carrying four cylinders. This engine is capable of delivering a maximum power of 120 PS at 6600 rpm along with a peak torque of 145 Nm at 4600 rpm. Moreover, it is mated with a Continuous Variable Automatic transmission further assisted with Honda's Earth Dream technology.

5. Toyota Vios
hToyota Vios is a standard family car which has maintained a special status in Malaysian B-Segment market. Currently, it is available in five variants namely, 1.5 TRD Sportivo, 1.5G, 1.5E, 1.5J and 1.5MT. All these variants are powered by a common 1.5-litre DOHC petrol engine carrying 4 cylinders. The base variant is coupled with a 5 speed manual transmission while the other four variants have a 4 speed automatic transmission.
