MAA’s report shows a significant rise in Malaysia vehicle sales
KUALA LUMPUR: It was only recently that Malaysia Automotive Association (MAA) announced the country’s vehicle sales report for August.

How many cars were sold in Malaysia in August 2022?
A total of 66,614 vehicles were sold in Malaysia in Aug 2022.To everyone’s surprise despite the ongoing shortage of chips and components, vehicle sales in Malaysia grew. Yes, that’s true and too by a good 36 percent over the previous month. In July, a total of 48,922 units were sold and last month 66,614 vehicles found homes. The latter includes bookings received prior to July 30,2022 that were exempted from sales tax.

For those who are aware, the SST exemption was introduced two years back on June15,2020 and it offered 50 percent expansion for imported and 100 percent exemption for locally assembled cars. Also, buyers who booked their vehicle during the tax holiday phase have until March 31, 2023, to register their unit with the Road Transport Department to benefit from the tax relief.
Coming back to the over 66k August vehicle sales, it shows a 270 percent hike over the same period last year, wherein only 17,923 units were sold. All thanks to the reopening of the economy.
Sales of passenger vs commercial vehicles
As per MMA’s report, the sales of passenger vehicles went up from 15,475 (Aug 2021) to 59,766 units (Aug 2022). Commercial vehicle sales went up from 2,448 to 6,845 units.
