Kia's new EV arriving in March 2021
KUALA LUMPUR: Kia is working on an electric vehicle that will make its global debut on 21st March 2021. The said information was shared by the company's CEO, Ho-Sung Song during the 'CEO Investor Day' virtual broadcast.
Kia's upcoming EV is codenamed 'CV' and is projected as the company's new flagship vehicle. Being called a flagship vehicle puts a lot of pressure and the CV with its extensive suite of specifications justifies the tag very well. So, let's dive in and see what the Kia CV EV has to offer.
Kia CV EV platform
Kia's upcoming EV is built on the Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP). The said platform underpins a total of 11 battery EVs across Kia, Hyundai, and Genesis brands. The E-GMP showcases a skateboard-style architecture and benefits from the world's first mass-produced IDA, i.e., Integrated drive axle that brings together the inverter, motor, and single-speed gearbox into a single module. The IDA is mounted on the rear axle, so an all-wheel drive configuration can be provided by placing a second motor on the front axle.
The E-GMP comes with modular pouch-like battery cells that allow the range and wheelbase dimension alteration as per the vehicle's need. It also calls for a lower repair cost as an individual damaged cell can be replaced. The size and weight of the cells are reduced by a separate cooling structure which enhances the energy density by 10 percent.
Increasing motor's efficiency are bits like - a more direct spray-like coiling system, hairpin-wound stator coil, and silicon carbide power semiconductor.
Kia CV charging
The E-GMP supports 800V fast-charging - four-minute per 100 km charge time.
An inverter step-up method can be used to support lower voltages.
Kia CV performance
The upcoming Kia EV will have a range of 500 km and will come with ultra fast-charging capabilities. Further, the CV can complete a 0 to 100 kmph sprint in just three seconds.
So, what are your thoughts on the forthcoming Kia electric vehicle? Doesn't it sound powerful and efficient at the same time? In coming March, Kia will unveil it completely, giving us a better idea about its features, specs, and other details. So, stay tuned with Zigwheels Malaysia.
