  • This model is set to become the brand’s new gateway SUV, bringing a blend of distinctive design and robust features to the entry-level segment.

The Jaecoo J5 showcases a bold, boxy SUV silhouette, similar in aesthetics to its larger sibling, the Jaecoo J7.There's definitely a continuity of this off-road rugged theme associated with Jaecoo SUVs, even taking design inspiration from some of the worlds outdoor wonders.

Up front, it sports Jaecoo’s signature waterfall grille, framed by sharp, rectangular LED headlights. There's no chequered pattern on the headlights on the J5, but the slim look is similiar to the J7. The overall design retains the tough, squared-off look that’s becoming synonymous with the brand’s SUV lineup, which for example takes inspiration from the world's tallest mountains for its rear end design, giving it an upright and strong presence.

Sized at 4,380 mm in length, 1,860 mm in width, 1,650 mm in height, with a 2,620 mm wheelbase, the Jaecoo J5 competes directly with rivals like the Honda HR-V, Proton X50, and Omoda 5.

Despite being a smaller B-segment model, the J5 retains a refined level of luxury inside, blending high-end materials and technology.

Its interior features a 13.2-inch portrait-oriented infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple Car Play, that connects from the centre console ala Mercedes-Benz, a dash integrated digital instrument cluster, and two-tone faux leather upholstery, all aimed at providing a premium feel.

Notably, the panoramic sunroof and power-adjustable front seats add a touch of sophistication.

There's also a 16.8 Million colour Gamut ambient lighting, which gives owners the opportunity to spruse up the dashboard during night time. According to Jaecoo at the global reveal event, the windows are double glazed soundproof glass, which helps with a peacful environment inside the cabin. Jaecoo also mentioned that the J5 is equipped with a best in class 1.45m2 integrated panoramic glass roof which comes with a powered hard cover sunshade.

Rear passengers aren’t left out either, with good space for three, plus a single but large rear air conditioning vents and USB ports to enhance comfort on longer journeys.

Interestingly, the boot space, rated at 480 liters is larger than the J7's and is also expandable up to 1,180 liters - making it practical enough for most family needs, with the convenience of a powered tailgate and a rare inclusion these days – a full-size spare tire.

Under the hood, the Jaecoo J5 is equipped with a 1.6-litre turbocharged engine, producing 194 horsepower and 290 Nm of torque. Buyers will have a choice between front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive, both mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. Just like the J7, the J5 comes with 7 off-road centric driving modes, including mud, off-road, eco, normal, sport and snow.

They have also tested the J5 for 2 million kilometres in their reliability verifaction mileage test. Jaecoo also showcased that the independant suspension on the J5 combines a great balance of off-road driving and comort.

As for convenience and safety features, the J5 comes with L2+ level of intelligent driving as well as 19 driving assistance systems such as adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking and many more.

This new B-segment SUV is set to make its way to international markets, with Malaysia expected to be among them by 2025. Jaecoo Malaysia plans to assemble the J5 locally at its new facility in Shah Alam, signaling a broader strategy to expand its model lineup in the region.

As Jaecoo ramps up its international ambitions, the J5’s blend of design, features, and performance positions it as a strong contender in the ever-growing B-SUV crossover segment, especially when you consider that it has to be more attainable than its bigger brother, the J7.
