Honda teases the new Civic Type R ahead of debut in 2022

KUALA LUMPUR: Honda unveiled the first glimpse of the upcoming new-generation Civic Type R back in October and now it teased the model again. This time, we see the performance machine hitting around the home soil at the world-famous Suzuka circuit. 

The Japanese automaker continues the development of the car with additional testing and validation at the legendary circuit where the car could also be trying to break the front-wheel-drive production car lap record made by the Civic Type R Limited Edition in July 2020. Lapping the circuit in 2:23.993 seconds, this special version was equipped with revised dampers, reworked steering, and different Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres. The engineers also shed the weight of the car by 47 kg.

Just like the previous teaser, this time also the performance car is draped in a camo livery. But still, we can figure out some aggressive designing highlights of the car like a chunkier front grille with a honeycomb pattern, a larger and lower air intake, a higher and flatter rear wing, and a central triple exhaust setup with a larger middle tip.

When it comes to powertrain, the hardcore next-gen Civic Type-R is likely a get an upgraded engine in place of the ongoing turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol mill, which delivers a maximum power output of 320 PS along with a peak torque of 400 Nm. The current setup has a 6-speed manual transmission with a limited-slip differential. It allows the car to hit the century sprint in 5.8 seconds with a top speed of 270 kmph.

The forthcoming Civic Type R is said to be the brand’s final ICE-powered model in Europe. Its global debut is slated for the next year.
