Get ready for a locally-assembled version of X70 SUV
KUALA LUMPUR: A lot of information and insights were shared during the launch of the all-new Proton Saga. One piece of information was about the company’s Global Customer Product Audit score; the other was about the X70 CKD unit.
It was during the Proton’s future strategy presentation at the Saga launch event that CEO Dr. Li Chunrong shared details about automakers future production plans. He said that the company is well on track to deliver completely knocked down version of X70 SUV. The locally-assembled unit will reach us by the second-half of 2019. He also informed that the Tanjung Malim plant had produced its first body-in-white on 10th April 2019.
Li also informed that despite introducing an all-new model - X70 SUV along with a few facelifted models, the company only added two new plants for body assembly and final trim assembly. This for sure saves a lot of costs and we think that other production process like body painting and stamping would be carried out at the existing plants.
Proton chief also said that the localization of the CKD units would gradually increase to meet the automaker’s commitment to its vendors - the company has devoted 20 months to the X70 localization process. In addition, Proton also promised to maintain a considerably good amount of local content for its existing line-up.
