German Govt. To Retest All Volkswagen Diesel & Petrol Cars for Emissions

Kuala Lumpur: Excluding the recent Takata scandal, there is very little happening in the automotive world that can match the scale of the Volkswagen's 'Dieselgate' scandal that's shocking the world with back-to-back revelations since the first erupted in September, this year.

The latest update to the Volkswagen 'Dieselgate' scandal is that the German Government will retest all Volkswagen diesel and petrol cars to gauge their actual carbon dioxide and Nitrogen dioxide emission levels after the German automaker recently revealed that around 800,000 cars sold in Europe with petrol engines also had understated levels of carbon dioxide emissions and were more expensive to drive for buyers.

As reported by Reuters, Germany’s Transport Minister, Alexander Dobrindt, has expressed his “irritation” at one of the nation’s largest employer and has issued a directive that will see both diesel and petrol models from Volkswagen as well as Audi, Skoda and Seat retested for carbon dioxide and nitrogen dioxide emissions levels. Up to 98,000 petrol vehicles are now believed to have been dragged into the scandal, as well.

In the United States, things have gone worse because the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has issued a second 'notice of violation' (NOV) to five companies of Volkswagen Group claiming their 3.0 litre TDI V6 engine to be equipped with 'diesel emissions cheating devices. The affected models listed by EPA include 2014 Volkswagen Touareg, 2015 Porsche Cayenne, 2016 Audi A6 Quattro, A7 Quattro, A8, A8L, and Audi Q5.

The automaker has issued a 'stop sale' order of all the aforesaid models in the U.S. as well as Canada. Amid all these revelations and incidents, things have become more difficult for Volkswagen because earlier it was reported that the German government will retest only nitrogen dioxide emissions of the VW diesel cars, but now it will also retest all VW petrol cars to gauge their genuine emissions levels. “We all have an interest that everything at VW is turned over and reviewed,” added Dobrindt. Till date, the engines which are claimed to be affected by 'diesel emissions cheating codes, include 1.6-litre EA189 diesel engine, 1.6L and 2.0L EA288 diesel engine in addition to 3.0L TDI V6 Engine used in Volkswagen, Audi, and Porsche Models.
