German Federal Motor Transport Authority Approves VW's Fix for 'Dieselgate' Affected EA189 Engines

Kuala Lumpur: The German Federal Motor Transport Authority has approved Volkswagen's fix for 'Dieselgate' affected EA189 Engine. Now the automaker will start a recall for EA189 1.6-liter and 2.0-liter four-cylinder TDI engines in January 2016. Yesterday, Volkswagen released a short explainer video on Youtube, explaining the measures required to make the 'Dieselgate' affected EA189 1.6-liter and 2.0-liter four-cylinder TDI engines compliant with EPA regulations.

 

The German automaker has said that the 1.6-liter EA189 diesel engine will just need a software upgrade and a piece of a mesh will be installed in front of the car's air mass sensor. The fix will require about one hour for each vehicle. On the other hand, Volkswagen's 2.0-liter EA189 diesel engine will only require a software update to become compliant with EPA standards.

For the 1.2-liter diesel engines, the automaker is still developing a fix and the 'final technical solution' will be presented before the German Federal Motor Transport Authority for approval, later this month. Like the 2.0-liter TDI engines, the fix is likely to be a software update.

All updates are designed to make TDI engine compliant with EPA regulations without affecting the performance or fuel consumption of the vehicle. However, not every variant has been tested yet.

In the United States, Volkswagen recently gave out two gift cards, each worth of $500 (one prepaid card that can be used anywhere and other redeemable at Volkswagen dealerships) to every owner of the 'Dieselgate' affected model under its 'Goodwill Package'. The German automaker also offered three years of 24-hour roadside assistance to all the owners. However, in Europe, the company is not compensating the owners of 'Dieselgate' affected cars. Instead, it has decided to recall all the 'Dieselgate' affected vehicles to fix the issue and is taking measures to ensure that the car owners are inconvenienced as least as possible during the process.
