GAC Aion UT EV revealed in China; Will it come to Malaysia?

KUALA LUMPUR: GAC Group’s electric car brand Aion has unveiled a new electric car in the Chinese market, called the UT. It is an electric hatchback that has the BYD Dolphin and the Volkswagen ID.3 in its sights.

    Dimensions

    The Aion UT has a length of 4,270 mm, a width of 1,850 mm, and a height of 1,575 mm, and carries a wheelbase of 2,750 mm. The kerb weight ranges from 1510 kg to 1540 kg.

    Exterior

    In terms of exterior design, the EV boasts a contemporary design with a grille-less front end and oval-shaped LED headlights. The silhouette is marked by a long wheelbase and short overhangs, making it ideal for city manoeuvrability. Adding to the clean and modern appearance are flush door handles and rounded contours. The EV is likely to come with 16-inch or 17-inch wheels.

    Interior

    The automaker released the comic book-style sketches of the upcoming EV, showcasing its free-standing digital instrument cluster and large infotainment screen. The car also features a floating-type centre console with a pair of cupholders, a two-spoke steering wheel, and some colourful inserts.

    Drivetrain and range 

    The new Aion EV is powered by a single electric motor tuned to generate a maximum power of 134 hp. The motor is fed by a lithium iron phosphate battery pack that is likely to offer over a driving range of 600 km on a single charge. The top speed of the EV is rated at 150 kmph.

    Price

    While the official pricing is yet to be revealed, the Aion UT is expected to be priced under CNY 100,000 (approximately equal to RM 61,689) in the Chinese market.

    GAC launched the Aion Y Plus electric SUV in Malaysia earlier this year. It is offered in two variants in Malaysia - Elite and Premium, priced at RM 119,800 and RM 135,800, respectively.

    Looking forward, the automaker can bring the Aion UT to our shores as it is the brand’s global strategic model. This model could become a strong contender in the fast-growing Malaysian electric car market, appealing to eco-conscious buyers and helping the brand boost its local presence.
