All Ford nameplates to be electrified in Europe by 2030
KUALA LUMPUR: Ford is the newest entry in the ever-growing list of automakers who have committed to go all-electric over the coming years. Yes, the American auto giant is all set to overhaul its business in Europe drastically with an intent to sell only electric vehicles in the old continent by 2030.
Ford says that by mid-2026, 100 percent of its passenger vehicles in Europe will be zero-emissions capable, including plug-in hybrid or pure-electric, and by 2030, these will be completely all-electric. In the same way, the brand’s commercial vehicles will also be zero-emissions capable, all-electric or plug-in hybrid, by 2024. And by the end of 2030, it expects to get two-thirds of its commercial vehicle sales from electrified models.
To do so, Ford has planned to spend around $1 billion for revamping its factory in Cologne, Germany, where it will build EVs by using Volkswagen’s MEB platform. It is expected that the first production vehicle from the updated factory would be rolled out by 2023.
Back in 2019, the American automaker struck a deal with the German brand to use its electric-vehicle modular platform. The said EV architecture will underpin a total of 15 million electric cars that Ford aims to sell. It sets a target to produce more than 600,000 vehicles for the European market using the MEB architecture over the next six years.
“We successfully restructured Ford of Europe and returned to profitability in the fourth quarter of 2020,” said Stuart Rowley, president of Ford European operations. “Now we are charging into an all-electric future in Europe with expressive new vehicles and a world-class connected customer experience.”
Besides Ford, British-based Jaguar Land Rover recently announced its plan to make Jaguar an EV car brand by 2026. Nissan, Bentley, Maserati, Volvo, and General Motors have already revealed their strategies of becoming 100% electric, in one or the other way.
