Eco-friendly Toyota Fortuner Flex Fuel on display at GIIAS 2023
KUALA LUMPUR: Toyota has pulled the wraps off an eco-friendly iteration of the popular Fortuner SUV at the Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show 2023. The latest model is called the “Toyota Fortuner Flexy Fuel'', which runs on bio-ethanol (E-100) fuel made up of organic materials.

In addition to the Toyota Fortuner Flexy Fuel, Toyota also showcased the Corolla Cross running on bioethanol and the innovative Corolla Cross H2 concept powered by hydrogen during the show.Like the standard version, the Toyota Fortuner flex-fuel also houses a 2.7-litre, four-cylinder engine, which has been significantly modified to run efficiently on 100% bio-ethanol fuel. The said fuel is a renewable and more environmentally friendly energy source compared to regular petrol or diesel and thus the new Toyota Fortuner flex-fuel emits lower carbon emissions.
Speaking about the power numbers, the flex-fuel engine kicks out a maximum power of 161 bhp and a peak torque of 243 Nm, which is 3 hp and 2 Nm less than the standard petrol-powered Fortuner offered in Indonesia. The power is transmitted to the rear wheels through a 5-speed automatic gearbox.
Besides the modified environmental-friendly engine, the Flexy Fuel Fortuner model also gets an exclusive livery that boldly showcases its green credentials. However, there are no other revisions made to this particular version of the SUV, which is currently in the prototype stage.
In addition to the Toyota Fortuner Flexy Fuel, the Japanese automaker also previewed the Corolla Cross running on bioethanol and the innovative Corolla Cross H2 concept powered by hydrogen during the show. The latter is equipped with a 1.6-litre turbocharged three-cylinder engine borrowed from the GR Corolla, which is re-engineered with high-pressure hydrogen direct injection technology
Toyota dedicated the GIIAS 2023 event to showcase its advanced and sustainable carbon-neutral mobility technology, which ranges from eco-friendly ICE vehicles, and electrified vehicles, to Flex-fuel Vehicles designed to meet specific customer needs. This strategy aims to bolster the growing electrification market in Indonesia, which has risen from 1.9% last year to 4.6% in the first half of 2023, where Toyota holds a dominant 49% market share.
