Dongfeng, a powerhouse in China's automotive industry, is working hand in hand with PEKEMA, the Association of Malay Importers and Traders of Motor Vehicles, as the official distributor for this model in Malaysia. We'll delve more into PEKEMA's role and significance later.

The Dongfeng Box is the first vehicle to be built on the company's Quantum Architecture S3 platform, an achievement that underscores Dongfeng’s dedication to innovation in the electric vehicle space. Although it was only recently launched in China, Malaysia has been chosen as the first country to receive a right-hand drive version, highlighting the growing acceptance of EVs here.

Despite Dongfeng's new-ish history with electric vehicles, including the rebadging of its models under well-known brands such as Dacia and Renault, the Box represents a fresh direction for the company. PEKEMA told us that the platform and technology underpinning the Box are entirely Dongfeng’s, dispelling any misconceptions about a reliance on Renault technology despite Dongfeng’s joint venture with the French automaker.

    Dongfeng Box

In terms of design and dimensions, the Dongfeng Box presents a compact yet stylish profile, measuring 4,020mm in length, 1,810mm in width, and 1,570mm in height. These measurements position it alongside popular models like the BYD Dolphin, though the Box offers a bit more interior space in our opinion, making it a practical choice for urban families. The vehicle’s exterior design is contemporary, with a sleek front that evokes comparisons to other electric vehicles like those from Smart, while the rear hints at influences from models like the Suzuki Ignis. Whatever one might think of it’s similarities to other vehicle design, it does have its own identity and we like the look of the EV.

Dongfeng boxInside, the Box surprisngly doesn’t disappoint, featuring a well-appointed cabin with premium feeling materials and thoughtful design touches. The use of high-grade feeling leather with a diamond pattern evokes a sense of luxury typically reserved for higher-end vehicles. Additionally, the inclusion of 32-colour ambient lighting and frameless rearview mirrors adds a touch of sophistication rarely seen in this segment.

The Dongfeng Box is not just about looks; it boasts impressive performance credentials as well. Powered by the Mach E ten-in-one electric drive system, it delivers a maximum power output of 70kW and a peak torque of 160Nm, allowing for a top speed of 140km/h. The vehicle also supports both fast and slow charging, with the ability to recharge from 30% to 80% in just 30 minutes on a DC charger. Furthermore, the Box features an external discharge function (V2L), making it an ideal companion for outdoor adventures where charging devices on the go is a necessity.

During the preview, PEKEMA representatives highlighted that six engineers from China are currently conducting road tests in Malaysia to fine-tune the Box for local conditions. This level of attention to detail suggests that Dongfeng and PEKEMA are serious about ensuring the vehicle meets the expectations of Malaysian consumers.

The interior of the Box also offers a range of technological features designed to enhance the driving experience. It includes a 12.8-inch floating central touchscreen, wireless charging for mobile devices, and Level 2 ADAS intelligent driving assistance functions. Although Android Auto and Apple CarPlay doesn’t seem to be natively supported, the system does offer a mirroring feature, but its user interface is intuitive and crisp, reminiscent of system offered by smart vehicles.Other notable features include Automatic parking, LED headlights, adaptive cruise control,540-degree surround view camera.

Two variants will be offered: the E2 and E3. The key distinction between them lies in their driving range and battery capacity, with the E2 providing a range of 330 km and the E3 extending that to 430 km. Despite this difference, both variants share identical performance specifications.

PEKEMA, with its extensive network and deep industry expertise, is well-positioned to support the launch of the Dongfeng Box in Malaysia. The organisation has been a pivotal player in the Malaysian automotive industry for over 40 years, and its commitment to advancing electric mobility is evident in its investment in EV infrastructure and partnerships with global automakers.

Central Auto Distributors Bhd (CADB), a wholly-owned subsidiary company of PEKEMA, has been assigned to assume the role as an exclusive importer and distributor for Dongfeng passenger car in Malaysia market.CADB aims to leverage its global partnership with DFMIEC to capitalize on EV-related incentives. With direct access to PEKEMA’s expertise in areas like regulatory support, business development, and industry networking, CADB is well-positioned to advance electric mobility in Malaysia.

Datuk Hj Mohamed Nazari Bin Noordin, President of PEKEMA, expressed enthusiasm for the future, stating, "PEKEMA is committed to supporting the government's vision in accelerating a comprehensive EV ecosystem. This project with Dongfeng is a significant milestone and a testament to Malaysia's importance as a key international market."

Operation Director of CADB, Dato' SM Zulkifli Bin SM Amin, added, "We are thrilled to embark on this journey with our network of valued dealers. The team is finalizing a retail package that will benefit our customers, especially in after-sales support."

Currently 4 dealers have signed up for the project and Dato' SM Zulkifli said that they will be spaced out throughout the nation to provide support. The network will include 3S centers as well as standalone appointed affiliates which might host the Box at their recon dealerships.

Pricing details haven't been officially disclosed yet, but CADB’s General Manager, Wan Ahmad Fadzli Wan Mustafa, hinted that they're considering a ceiling price around RM120k, though it could be lower. The entry-level variant is expected to be closer to the RM100k range.

As the first country to debut the right-hand drive version of the Dongfeng Box, Malaysia is set to play a significant role in the vehicle’s global rollout.PEKEMA is even exploring the possibilities to locally assemble the model at Rembau which the say will mainly be for the local market but not excluding export possibilities. With PEKEMA at the helm, the Dongfeng Box is poised to make a strong impression on the local market, offering a blend of style, performance, and practicality that should appeal to a wide range of consumers.
