Confirmed: Proton X50 to be launched in 2020
KUALA LUMPUR: Proton has confirmed that it will be bringing in the new and smaller SUV, expected to be called as the X50, which, unlike the X70, will come as a completely-knocked down (CKD) version, straight from the facility. The announcement was made by the group’s CEO, Li Chunrong at the Chinese New Year media launch.
Based on the Geely Binyue, the upcoming X50 will feature the Proton’s new infinite weave grille at the front and familiar equipment as its bigger sibling. Some expected features are dual-zone climate control, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, panoramic sunroof and a 10.25-inch infotainment system with touchscreen. The system is expected to be powered by the Geely Key User Interface (GKUI) along with the “Hi Proton” voice control function.
Under the hood, it is expected to be powered by Binyue’s 1.5-litre on the higher side. Though the Binyue is available with two powertrain options in China, a 1.0-litre in-line three-cylinder turbocharged engine mated to a 6-speed manual transmission and a 1.5-litre unit coupled with a 7-speed DCT. While the former is capable of pumping out a max power of 136 PS and a peak torque of 205 Nm, the latter is good for 176 PS of power and 255 Nm of torque.
