Chevrolet’s electric pickup truck is in making; will offer 400+ miles of range
KUALA LUMPUR: In its recently released sustainability report, General Motors highlighted the intentions of producing electric vehicles and thus added itself to the already-long list of carmakers planning to sell electric pickups in the near future.
The automaker mentioned that it is on track to allocate around $20 billion into the production of its electric and autonomous vehicles between 2020 and 2025. It will have a total of 20 electric models on the market by 2023.
Out of the 179-page sustainability report providing details on upcoming EVs, the one that piqued our interest the most is an electric pickup truck from Chevrolet. However, the automaker did not give a lot of information about the model, except claiming it as BET, which may stand for "battery-electric truck."
The report describes the "Chevrolet BET Truck, which will be the brand's first electric full-size pickup, offering 400+ miles of range on a single charge." No further details are available, which leaves open the question of whether it will be a carbon-copy of Silverado or something completely different.
One thing, we can assume that the upcoming truck will use GM's new Ultium platform and battery technology, as we know that the GMC Hummer electric pickup truck and SUV will have Ultium too.
Speaking about the competitors who already have electric pickup trucks in the making, Tesla unveiled its Cybertruck last year, expected to come in three iterations - 250 miles, 300 miles, and 500 miles of range, slated for release in late 2021. Last month, Ford revealed its plan of bringing an electric version of F-150 pickup in 2022. Rivian, Nikola, Bollinger, and Lordstown are some other brands that have showcased some kind of electric truck recently.
In addition to a full-size electric pickup, General Motors has also stated its other brands' plans. It includes a mid-sized electric SUV and Bolt from Chevrolet, two three-row luxury electric SUVs from Cadillac, electric Hummer from GMC, and an electric SUV and compact utility vehicle from Buick.
