Chery Tiggo 9 gets an update in China; Will it come to Malaysia?

KUALA LUMPUR: First introduced in June 2023, the Chery Tiggo 9 has received a mid-life upgrade in the Chinese market. The updated SUV comes with design enhancements, new colours, and a new plug-in hybrid trim, called the Tiggo 9 C-DM.

Let’s know the changes in detail.

While the new Chery Tiggo 9 looks pretty much the same as before, it gets a larger, more compact waterfall-style grille, enhancing the SUV’s bold and modern appearance. The side profile features hidden door handles and stylish wheels with a denser rim design. Among the other key highlights are aggressive bumpers, striking headlights, a floating roof, and a one-piece tail light cluster. The automaker has upgraded the colour palette of the SUV by adding two new green shades for the Tiggo 9 C-DM.

Inside, the layout is mostly unchanged, with soft materials throughout. The SUV boasts a 24.6-inch dual screen for the infotainment unit and the instrument panel and a 50-inch augmented-reality head-up display. The equipment kit also comprises a 256-colour ambient lighting system, dual-zone climate control, leather-wrapped seats, a built-in wireless charging pad, a Sony sound system, adjustable rear seat backrests, and advanced driving assistance features.

The new Tiggo 9 is powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged inline-four petrol engine as the outgoing model. The said mill kicks out a maximum power of 261 PS and a peak torque of 400 Nm. The front wheel drive models come mated to a 7-speed DCT while the all-wheel drive options have an Aisin-sourced 8-speed automatic gearbox as standard. The 8AT FWD version completes the century sprint in 7.9 seconds, while the AWD model completes the same task in 8.5 seconds.

The Chery Tiggo 9 C-DM, on the other hand, features a 1.5-litre turbocharged inline-four petrol engine generating 156 PS and 220 Nm and a front electric motor good for making 224 PS and 390 Nm. The total system output is rated at 381 PS and 610 Nm, propelling the SUV from zero to 100 kmph in 8.8 seconds.

Feeding the motor is a 19.43 kWh ternary lithium battery pack supplied by Gotion, which offers a CLTC pure electric range of 106 km (or WLTC 82 km).

The battery can be charged with a DC input up to 41 kW, achieving 30-80% SoC in just 25 minutes. However, the slower AC charging takes 3.5 hours. The SUV also boasts a V2L system providing 6.6 kW for powering devices.

Also part of the plug-in hybrid setup is a 3DHT transmission that comes with six driving modes - HEV, EV, EV+, Normal, Eco, and Sports.

The 2025 Chery Tiggo 9 price in China begins at CNY 152,900 (approx RM 90k) and goes up to CNY 203,900 (approx RM 120k). 

Will the Chery Tiggo 9 come to Malaysia?

Yes, the Chery Tiggo 9 aka Jaecoo J8 is expected to come to Malaysia. Earlier this year, Chery showcased a pre-update version of its three-row SUV in the local market. The launch is anticipated to happen in the fourth quarter of 2024.
