Check out the 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe police package
KUALA LUMPUR: A police package for Tahoe is something Chevrolet has been doing since 1997. Every generation of Tahoe arrived ever since has had a police package, and the all-new 2021 Tahoe is no different. And mind you, when we say police package its not just lights, radio attachment, and sirens attached to it, as Chevrolet has added kits to meet the demand of law enforcement.
The 2021 Tahoe police package is available in two forms:
- Police Pursuit Vehicle or PPV
- Special Service Vehicle or SSV
The Tahoe PPV is pursuit-rated, meaning it can take on bends without heft. Rear-wheels drive is standard, but a four-wheel drive is also available as an optional offering. According to Chevrolet, Tahoe PPV 4x4 is the only pursuit-rated full-size SUV.
The Tahoe SSV, on the other hand, is primarily designed for the off-road application. It is offered in a four-wheel-drive option and has a lifted suspension.
Further, the police package includes:
- Beefed-up suspension
- Bigger brakes
- Heavy-duty alternator and cooling system
- 20-inch steel rims
- Camaro engine internals
These vehicles do not have a centre console; instead, there is a mounting panel for equipment like mobile data terminals, weapons, and the radio. The steering wheel controls are modified and can be used for sirens and lights, if needed.
For a police vehicle, high-performance is a must, and taking care of the same is a 5.3-litre V8 mill with cylinder deactivation. It makes a maximum work of 355 PS along with a peak torque of 519 Nm. Sounds familiar? Well, that’s because it is carried over the 2015-2020 model. Though Chevrolet has not given out the performance times but taking clues from the civilian version in the previous-gen models, the Tahoe can complete the 0 to 100 kmph sprint in 7.5 seconds. However, with the 10-speed automatic transmission, it might be a bit quicker.
As for the competitors, the Tahoe PPV will go up against the Ford Police Interceptor Utility that’s based on the new Explorer, and for on-road patrols, it will go indirectly against the Dodge Charger Pursuit. The Tahoe SSV will directly compete against the Ford Expedition SSV.
According to Chevrolet, the 2021 Tahoe police package will report on duty by the first-half of 2021. Depending on the agency it will be serving, these two SUVs will either be wearing full police livery or stealthily cruise as an unmarked unit.
