BYD names electric pickup ‘Shark’, debut set for this week

KUALA LUMPUR: After releasing teaser images of its highly-anticipated pickup truck earlier this month, BYD has now confirmed that the model will be called the "Shark." The official world premiere of the pickup will be held at the 2024 Beijing Auto Show, scheduled to begin April 25, 2024.

In addition to that, BYD has also revealed the Shark pickup truck will be equipped with a dual-mode off-road (DMO) plug-in hybrid powertrain, challenging both traditional internal combustion engine and electric models. 

Introduced last year, the DMO Platform powers the Bao 5, an off-road 4x4 SUV hailing from the company’s new sub-brand Fang Cheng Bao. The platform comprises an advanced chassis, a specialised hybrid architecture, four-wheel drive, and off-road modes. It promises efficient off-road performance with enhanced battery safety and superior traction. BYD claims the DMO achieves exceptional system power while saving 35% in fuel compared to gasoline vehicles.

As the BYD Shark pickup and Bao 5 SUV share the same underpinning, the former can be seen as the pickup version of the latter. Several shots of the vehicle, including both right and left-hand drive variants from various countries, fuels speculation that the BYD Shark may launch in key RHD markets like Australia. 

The pickup truck has been recently sighted in Mexico without any camouflage, showcasing its rugged design elements. The bold front fascia of the BYD Shark features the prominent BYD logo, a distinctive two-step headlight setup flanking the grille, and sleek C-shaped daytime running lights positioned just below the hood line. 

Spy shots have also provided some insights about the BYD Shark interior. It features a 15.6-inch rotating touchscreen infotainment system, reminiscent of the one found in the Seal. This advanced infotainment system is expected to offer a seamless user experience, with features such as wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, ensuring connectivity and entertainment on the go. 

The introduction of the Shark pickup truck represents the brand’s commitment to diversify its product lineup and capture a larger share of the global electric vehicle market. As anticipation grows for its official debut at the 2024 Beijing Auto Show, car enthusiasts eagerly await more information about the vehicle’s specifications, features, and availability.
