“Back to the Future” car DeLorean DMC-12 is “Back to the Present”, production starts by 2017
Kuala Lumpur: Everyone has watched Robert Zemeckis' fiction flick “Back to the Future” and many even fantasizes of driving that iconic DeLorean DMC-12, the car that served as the Time Machine car in the movie. Well, your fantasies are actually going to fulfill as DeLorean has decided to revive the production of its widely popular car the DMC-12. This car has been in the culture from last four decades and the news of its production again has exuberated the car enthusiasts around the world.
The car became quite a celebrity after the release of movie, however it has also been listed in the biggest car scandals of all time. The demise of DeLorean Motor Company happened because of the delayed production schedules of DMC-12 considering its low popularity at the launch and John DeLorean’s arrest for drug-trafficking in 1982 (he was found not guilty). Although, now the company is back on its feet and planning to produce copies of DMC-12 again as per the America’s “Low Volume Motor Vehicle Manufacturers Act” (H.R. 2675). This act legally allows the American carmaker to use the leftover parts of DMC-12 and assemble new vehicles. Sources suggests that the falcon wings coupe can be on production floors by as early as 2017, and around 325 DeLoreans will be produced every year in its homeland United States.
It has been reported that once the production of DMC-12 will begin, then the company hopes to build one vehicle per month to per week. Once the 300-vehicle run will be completed, the company would be left with enough supplies to service new cars as well as the existing cars built in the 1980s.
The powertrain of the car is not yet sure because it will be built according to the law and that requires to meet set emission standards of the year that the car is built. Therefore, the original Peugeot-Renault-Volvo (PRV) 2.85-liter V-6 engine will be striped off with a newer advanced powertrain.
It can be noted that GM’s 6.2-liter LS3 V-8 is already been used and certified for low-volume replica cars, thus an engine of that magnitude can be applied in the DM-12. However, the DMC-12 might be equipped with a V6 delivering 300 to 40 hp because of the packing restraints.
Apart from the powertrain the all new DMC-12 will also be packed with the latest interior and exteriors features like heated and cooled seats, navigation systems, halogen exterior lighting with LED DRL's as well as 17 to 18-inch alloy wheels wrapped in high performance tires.
These all will be provided by the company but the Flux capacitor for time travel will be supplied by the customers only!
